    Hey all, new here.

Just opened my brand new G73JW-XA1 that i got from amazon today, and after cleaning up all the bloatware and everything, i went to update the driver for the GTX 460m gfx card, as everyone says you should. So i went into device manager, removed the current driver, which then caused display to disappear and the computer to default to the VGA display, making everything all big. Restarted the computer, and clicked on the driver installation (i had the correct driver), but when it went to scan for the correct hardware, it said none could be found. I can revert it by system restore, but then ill permanantly be stuck with an old graphics card driver....

    Help?

use nvidia uninstaller to remove. reboot in safe mode by pressing f8 on POST and run driver sweeper to get rid of old drivers. reboot again normally and install new drivers. then reboot again to complete installation.

Nope, didn't work. It is not re-detecting the GTX 460m card after the restart. Is it faulty, and should i RMA it?

no just maybe there arent any newer drivers for the 460 yet. should leave what was already on there for now. at least it worked.
what driver did attempt to load?
260.89 and 260.99 from october are the only 2 out at the moment for the 460 card.

You can try the 265.xx drivers that were released on the Asus website no so long ago. It seems like they uploaded it before Nvidia.

go to start >control panel >nvidia control panel >bottom left system information and at top it will say what driver you have installed.

Find the .inf file in the driver that you want to install. Then in the .inf find 460m or 460 mobility or something like that and compare Device Id's and Revision with your 460m device id which you can find in device manager. If they mismatch copypaste the corresponding strings and replace the devid/revision with your own

Okay, found it. Says i have driver version 259.12 installed. So does this rule out that i have the most up to date drivers, im guessing?

Which is weird, cause now that ive googled that, the products 259.12 supports are only the Quadro series...

I have a 460m as well, (just in a Clevo w860cu--see sig) and had huge problems with drivers. I'll just tell you what I've come across:

    Please read this short thread:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/538644-gtx-460m-drivers.html

I'm currently using the Asus 265.66 drivers (see the bottom of the thread above to get the download) and they seem to work well with the exception of not being able to adjust the brightness on the screen while in windows (you can adjust it prior to the windows boot screen...in other words during Bios post). I ended up having to use the modified INF file to allow me to install the driver, but you may not have to seeing that you have an Asus laptop to begin with. Hopefully this helps! PM me if you dont know how to use a modified INF file.

Wow, this is depressing. I'm looking to buy a good gaming laptop and all I see everywhere is problems, problems -- with both the ATI 5870 and Nvidia 460M. Drivers, vBioses, (various colors of) "screens of death", etc.

Guess I'll get a desktop for gaming.

I wonder what happened to Asus, Dell/Alienware and a few others? They once had great reputations. Now they release models with junky graphics cards with buggy drivers and bad firmware. And the OEMs can't design cases to keep them cool or they use cheap thermal paste which evaporates in a few weeks or months. Depressing.
