ATI 2600 HD trouble

I am having trouble with my 2600. During game play the computer freezes and the screen goes black. Its done this with C&C 3 and supreme commander. From what I understand it should play these games just fine.

Im a bit of a noob so forgive me.

Windows came up with an error:

Ive gone to the ATI site, the only driver available is version 8.1
the version listed on my laptop is 8.391
should I install the 8.1 driver?

Any other suggestions?

This is an Asus laptop. T7500 2.2 ghz chip. 3 Gigs of ram. vista 32bit. ati 2600 hd 512mb ddr2.

Thanks guys in advance. This is my first laptop purchase in 5 years, replacing an averatec. Quite a leap. I just want it to run good.
