I have 8510p and problems with my GPU - BSODs, strange boxes of black appearing, all usually when connected to an ext. display - , I'm sure its the drivers and really hope omega drivers will be released soon.

I've had lots of trouble with the video drivers here as well. I also upgraded to the new HP drivers (Oct 7 or 8 release date) but they are crap and crash more than the old ones.

To make matters worse my keyboard does not work in Safe Mode so I can't even uninstall there and reinstall. I tried the Microsoft "fix" related to this issue but it did nothing.

I also tried the modded drivers a few weeks ago and they also crashed frequently.

    I am on XP Pro.

Are most of these GPU problems on XP or spread equally between Vista as well?

    Gday
I was thinking of buying the HDX with the ATI HD 2600 XT , apparently it has GDDR4
Do you think it will handle a game like crysis ??

It should handle it fine, don't know about DX10, but you should be able to do medium-high settings in DX9 at 1440x900 or so.

Do all 8510p's come with gddr3? Even the ones that are sold by other vendors and not customized by HP?

On the other hand, is it possible to use amd gpu tool for the 2600hd on the 8510p?

    Thanks Ackeron.
Has anyone gotten good results with the AMD gpu toolwith the 8510p? I've read through many threads about the 2600HD or the 8510p, but I don't remember coming across any results by the AMD tool. Maybe I missed something. But I do know that users did get really good scores with the tool and their A7k-A1 (in this thread and others).

I was hoping to make my 100th post extra special by posting some OC information but I guess it'll have to wait. Short answer, yes, the HD2600 is overclockable. If you can afford to wait, I will be posting some results about my OC (only half done atm [specs in sig]) hopefully later today (eveningish), or possibly tomorrow/early this weekend.

i shouldve been more clear. I hear the 2060 is overclockable, but the HP 8510p has underclocked it and somehow prevented overclocking. let us know how your comp does, though.

I'll PM you if I remember, but I'll just post a new thread saying: DDR2 HD2600 OC Results!!!! That way, people will have a definite place to go when they want to see OC results, instead of having to look through an entire thread for a single post.

out of the curiosity, is this the 8510p everybodys talking about?
anybody got any comments on hp's 12 cell batt option? or is that not available for this model?

I might get this, still looking at the asus F3SA and F8SV, so far i really like what i have been hearing about hps batt life and customer service.

Question thogh, from the hp's website:
    Warranty - year(s)
HP Services offers limited 3-year standard parts and labor warranty, pick-up or carry-in, and toll-free 7 x 24 hardware technical phone support; 1-year limited warranty on primary battery. On-site service and warranty upgrades are also available

Does that mean you have to pay extra for door service?

How would you overclock this card (256mb HD2600 GDDR3) or the 8600m GT 512mb?
I'm a complete noob at overclocking, I only understand what it does, so if you have a link or something be sure to post it.
    Thanks.

So the bottomline of this thread is that the DDR3 HD2600 is in the middle of the 8600 DDR2 and DDR3?

Can I just say that I love my HD2600. It is doing much better then I expected. Especially since I can pummel through Gears of War with everything on high except post processing and shadows with a solid framerate in excess of 30fps.

Yeah, me too. I haven't used Linux for gaming yet, but from what I've been reading things are getting better in that area. I'm pretty sure all Steam games work great, and UT, and some others.

Because most game manufacturers don't port to Linux, it's up to the Linux community to create usable emulation, mainly through WINE, which is really coming along now. The development cycle has really increased. I think things will be much better in a year or two. For now I'll stick with XP for gaming, but start transitioning all the games that I can over to Linux in the near future.

as far as linux goes, yes, source based games are up and running, as is cod4.

however, the speed isn't quite up to par with windows.

IE- i can get 100 fps or so in css with all settings maxed at 1440x900 and aa and af to my liking (2x or 4x aa, 8x af)

in WINE, i can still get about 70-80 fps, but the details have to be set to "low", trilinear filtering instead of af, no aa...

i know thats not an ideal mathematical relationship between wine and windows, but that should give you the idea.

Thanks for the info. I think wine is really starting to come into its own so to speak. I expect things to continue improving. Wine may never be able to match native windows speed, but definitely close enough to be worthwhile.

Back to my original post, I'm really frustrated about the lack of Linux support for the Mobility Radeon HD 2600. There are so many great notebooks out with this GPU now, but I can't even consider them because they can't run Linux.

I've read one other report that Envy worked, but others say it didn't work for them. I don't have a notebook with the ATI card, but I'm considering the purchase of one, and this issue is holding me back. I'd hate to make the purchase and then find out it won't work for me.
