    Hello,
I'm currently choosing between the Lenovo t500, which has an ATI mobility radeon 3650 with 256 mb video ram, and the HP dv5t, which has an NVIDIA 9600m GT with 512 mb.

I know the NVIDIA is a superior card, but how does the ATI size up to it? What kinds of framerates would the ATI get, with games like Spore, Half-Life 2, Portal, and COD4? What about the NVIDIA?

The HD 3650 in the T500 is GDDR3 while the 9600M GT in the dv5 is DDR2, they have similar performance, niether is superior. The ATI card will be better for overclocking since it has better memory.

They have similar performance even though the ATI has 256 mb?

That sounds good, seeing as the T500 doesn't have the heating issues that the dv5t seems to have.

The ratings at Notebookcheck seem to show that the NVIDIA is better than the ATI, but is this difference evident in a real-world scenario, with the Lenovo T500 and the HP dv5t?

They would have similar performance even if the NVIDIA had 10000 mb, that doesn't matter in this case.

No, they don't show that, both the 9600M and HD 3650 have DDR2 and GDDR3 versions which have difference performance and they are mixed there.

Also, the benchmarks they have for the t500 and the dv5 are run at different resolutions and aren't comparable.

Both cards have a 128bit bus interface, which means they can only use at most 256mb of VRAM. Therefore, the extra 256mb the 9600M GT has won't matter in this case.

As others have said, the performance should be more or less equivalent since HP uses GDDR2 for their 9600M GT. The GDDR3 card should overclock a bit better as said above, but that's about it.

Some games will favor each card though(ex: Source games such as CS or Half-Life favor ATI cards)
