Anyone have any insight as to why there seems to be a worldwide shortage of these cards in both the desktop and mobile flavors? Newegg and tigerdirect are all out of stock on the GPUs and a retailer on these forums also states that the clone manufacturers have even stopped selling them due to shortages.

Is there a problem with the chips? Are they killing the 6990 and introducing the 7K series? Any other news or speculations?

shortages usually occur when demand exceeds supply.

I can understand small supply and even the principles of economics, but when your major computer parts retailers (newegg and TD) pull them from their website, and not even the "auto-notify" option, makes me think there's something else going on.

nobody smart buys the desktop 6990 and the 6990m has just been released and supply < demand because theyve got good performance and are half the price of their nvidia counter part 580m

It's more than that. Ever heard of bitcoin/bitmining? The easiest way to say it, is AMD (GPU) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>nVidia>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Intel>>AMD (CPU) in bitmining.

HD6990 is the king supreme card in this. HD5970 would of been, but it has a poor second GPU power phase cooling design (bitming loves sheer ALU count, in addition to AMD GPU having certain math optimizations that allow them to do some heavily used bitmining ops in one clock, while nVidia GPU need at 2-4 clocks to do the same operation, further widening the divide between AMD and nVidia GPU in bitmining). As such, HD6900 series cards are being bought in group buys directly off the docks - before Newegg, Amazon, Tigerdirect, etc, can even get to them.

How long does it take for you mine anything of value? I'm thinking I need to put my 6990 to task.

By the time you earn $1 in bitcoins, you'd have spent like $3 in electricity.

You won't really get a lot of money with a single card... only huge rigs will allow you to make profits. And alone with only one card you don't get anything, you'd need to join a community.
