    X700 no doubt.

    The 9700 is outdated.

So is the X700 but its still newer.

Currently you should be looking for some along the lines of a X1400, X1600.

Which one is cheaper? If you play older games 2003/2004 downwards the 9700 is still an excellent card that performs well on the likes of Half Life 2, Far Cry, etc. The X700 is much better, and much newer, but if the 9700 works out alot cheaper, I'd opt for that if all you plan is playing older games.

If the prices are relatively similar just go for the X700.

it would need to be a whole lot cheaper, as its not just the video card he'd be downgraded by, cpu, chipset, ram, you can get a dell outlet e1505 with a core duo cpu,x1400 video, 1gig 533ddr2 ram, a dvdrw, and a nice sata hardrive, in the 80 to 120 gig range, for usuall under 800 bucks, with a full warrantee and support, plus option for extended

The X1400 has near the performance of the X700. It's slightly slower but offers much higher support for newer games, and better battery life.

9700 VS X700? go with the X700 nomatter what the extra cost. If you got the 9700 and tried to play a newer game, you'd regret it.

Even paired with a slower processor, the X700 is signifigantly faster than the X1400. However, I would be inclined to say it is still better to go with an X1400/Go7400 because they will come in a newer system w/ a dual-core processor.

    Just consider the following:

Nominal 3dmark05 scores: (gathered from another post in the forum)
    Mobility 9700 1500
    Mobility X1400 1700
    Mobility X700 2600

If gaming is important to you, go with the X700. Even if the newer processors are faster, they cannot bridge the gap of 900 points. Right now I am using a 128mb X700. It plays world of warcraft @1440x900 with all the options up (except AA/AF). The X1400 is not the same class as the X700.
