    Hi,

Just got a new notebook (Acer 5504 with an X700) and was wondering what was the best driver - ATI's Catalyst Mobility or Omega's version?

    thanks

I have an ATI in my desktop and I would go with the Omega drivers...they seem to be alot better. In desktops at least. I think it will like a 200 Mark difference in 3dMark05.

there really is no "best" driver. every driver works differently for everyone. personally, i like the ati drivers from ATI. they arent tweaked for better 3dmarkxx scores, but usually 200points is like...what...2fps in a game? to me 2fps doesnt matter much.

on the other hand if you are going to overclock your video card, i would suggest going with tweaked drivers, because of the performance boost.

    hope this helps.

    pb,out.

I use omegas, they dont include the Catalyst Control Center (CCC) but ATI tray tools instead. I also heard that the CCC eats up system resources though i've never tried it.

I use the stock Mobility Catalyst 6.2 because they are very stable and I don't have any problems.

Issues I have with the modded drivers are when I go on battery, it sometimes messes up. And, there are always little bugs in them . . . I just feel more comfortable with ATI's drivers.

I'm running 6.2 mobility CCC's right now. Previously I wasn running 5.11 based Omegas. I had briefly tried 5.13 Omegas with a noticeable performance drop. 6.1 based and 6.1 catalysts gave me some compatibility problems. However...the 6.2 CCC's are great. I'll try the 6.3 CCC's in a few days.

The Omegas used to be faster for me, but the newer 6.x Catalysts seem to be running smoother now.
