ATM the unique 4870 in notebooks is the one in Asus W90 and GTX280m SLI is better (not much but is better)...

    If they release a 4870 with GDDR5 it would smoke GTX280m :p

for the time being (if we are talking about single card to single card),
the Nvidia GTX 280M has a slight performance edge over the ATI Mobility 4870

If they add GDDR5 to the 4870 then ATI is goint to rule again :).

But atm those cards are pretty similar but the gtx 280 is just one step ahead.

the problem is that nobody has even seem a 4870 with GDDR 5 memory. i dont even think ATI with release them, its just another paper launch by ATI in laptops.

You may as well cram the 4850, 4870, 9800 gtx, 260, and 280 all in the same category. You're going to see a 10-15% difference, tops between these cards. What will make the most difference are the drivers, the software's architectural preference, and the user (overclocking, system maintenance, knowledge). The onboard memory can also make a sizeable difference at higher res and AA. The Nvidia cards come with 1GB by default...

Yes, GDDR5 4870 would beat 'em all, if it existed.

do you think that 1gb will make a difference.

we need to compare a 9800m gt to a 9800m gtx

Hopefully ATI's 4860 will make it's way into some laptops sometime in Aug/Sept once TSMC can get their 40nm process worked out.
Since the 4860 will be slightly faster than the 4850, it will be a better match for the GTX 260M/280M and much cooler.

Im sure I saw an ATI Mobility Radeon with GDDR5 in it . Mayby it was the desktop version.
From what everybody said I am more inclined to go with Nvidia at the moment.

My mistake the ATI HD4870 is GDDR5 in the Dell 730x desktop which has two of them in SLI config

The new Dell/Alienware m17x on Dells site has Nvidia 280GTX in SLI mode at 2GB GDDR3 , seems fast enough to me .

The m17 on alienwares site has ATI HD 3870 in crossfire mode for 1GB toal VRAM.

So in Aus I will be inclined to take take the Dell m17x

I wasnt being serious about that (hence the smile). Some guy unboxed one on youtube at it consisted if two 280GTX chips linked into one card. And the thing was HEAVY , he was saying. It also looked quite big to me as well - too big for a gaming notebook. Nvidia would have to redisign it completly.

No you haven´t rambo. But I have a 8800m GTX GX2 you could say in my XPS M1730 since both GPU´s is on one PCB board. That is the only one that has that solution and possibly the M17x too.

The 280m GTX will not last long what would make you think that, they are already outdated when they were released anyway. They are far from desktop performance with the GT200 cores. Sure they will last, my 8800m GTX in SLI still lasts and runs every game at 1920x1200.

The dell website now has the option of 4870's in crossfire which they are claiming is the most powerful option. I would be interested to see a M17x with 280's vs 4870's. Also interesting to see the new M15x with i7. I tend to find the driver support from Nvidia much better, but even then I feel as though Iam still not getting the full capability from my 9800m's.

Because they are the new GDDR5 HD 4870s ( finally ). The GDDR3 HD 4870 wasnt too far of the GTX 280m, and now with GDDR5, the HD 4870 will be significantly more powerful.

SLI just means multiple GPUs. There are no dual GPUs in laptops, so your most powerful solution now would be to have two GPUs in SLI mode.

Its obvious the 4870 is GDDR5, Alienware says its alot faster so it will definitly smoke the GTX 280m without a doubt..

W90 has dual 4870's, and they both have GDDR3 so far, only the desktop 4870 has GDDR5.

Should be interesting, I would guess though they won't be hugely better than the 280's. I hope they are though.

It's MXM 3.0, so that's impossible. A 1GB 4850 isn't any faster, so those us stuck with MXM 2.1 are tapped out with the 280M.
