    Hey guys,

I just purchased a DM4 i5 processor with switchable graphics with ATI 5450 card.

So I was just seeing how well it played games, I put in Titan Quest (came out in 2006 I think) and played on medium settings. I found that the left side, where the fan is/maybe GPU is started to get fairly hot. I was using HWmonitor to check the temps and found that it's hitting 90 C GPU, 75C CPU after 30 min, is this normal for small laptops? is this due to a build issue? or is it just DM4 design in general? My idles are 53C GPU, 48C CPU. would just using integrated graphics lower the temps?

    Thanks!!!

The problem is, are those temps dangerous over a long period of time? or are laptop GPU/CPU suppossed to run that hot? Thanks!

The idle temps are alright, the GPU load temp is not so good.

Have you tried looking at the laptops lounge in this forum? Looking there you can find if this issue is common or not.

Regarding the temps. In the past years 90C was somehow not extreme, but recent GPU, especially a low-mid end as yours, should not reach that much, more so playing Titan's Quest (which is not so graphically intensive).

    I hope this helps.

well, i would say its not cause for worry, but a cause for concern!

How old is your lappy? Check the usuals- ventilation / clean vents/ fan etc etc

It's possible your air vents are clogged.
I know ... you mentioned you just got it (but not if it's a used one, refurbished or whatnot).

You may want to try turning off your laptop and using a vacuum cleaner on all the holes of the laptop.
Alternatively, you could use a compressed air in a can to do this.

A gpu like the 5450 shouldn't really heat up like this ... my 9600m GT doesn't come close to these temps under load (maybe up to 65 or 70 degrees, but that's it).

Seriously, check your air vents first and foremost.
If cleaning them doesn't solve the problem, I would recommend you use your warranty and have the guys who sold you the laptop tell you what's at fault.

I bought it brand new as custom built, I called them and on the phone for 2 hours they are going to send it to the service center, Should I have agreed to that or tell them to get me a new one? cause it is brand new

Regarding Titan Quest itself, there are some fog effects that really lag on my Sony FW (with an ATI HD 4650)... I think there are also some issues with "rubber banding" (frame rate changes?) that occur in this game. However, it is likely 90C is still very extreme temperature for such a low end GPU.

90c+ with heat-up and cool-down is what killed the nVidia 7/8xxx series. I wouldn't ever want any component getting 90c... ESPECIALLY in a DM4. Those are thin framed, with a magnesium frame on bottom, and that has the potential to burn you! 90c = 194F water boils at 100c or 212F!

EDIT: I should also note that HP's typically DON'T have the best cooling systems around.

hp's are known to have had heating problems. However, since you can do your bit, cooling pad + regular cleaning can do wonders. You'd be amazed.

that usually helps a lot in cooling Hp laptops... they're designed so badly that there is no circulation of air and they run hot.
