Hmmm... so I'm buying a new laptop in the near future and have been trying to decide between two. (N81VG or N81VP-C1) The major difference between the two is the graphics card. One has the ATI HD4650 with GDDR3, the other GeForce GT 120M GPU (not yet released). I've been told the GeForce performs about the same as the GeForce 9600M GS. Can someone tell me what kind of performance difference there is between these cards? Am I going to really hate myself if I go with the HD4650? Although games aren't my primary objective with this laptop, they do play some role...

I do not really think it matters. But I would say the ATI is a better choice. I don't knowever how we ATI's overclock tough.

If the GT 120M is similar to the 9600M GS, then the ATI 4650 should beat it hands down. Seeing how the 9600M GS is similar to the desktop 9500 GT, and how the 4650 Mobility is similar to the desktop 4650, it is possible to use desktop benchmarks to give us a rough gauge.

Not too accurate due to the fact that the cards are overclocked, but it gives us a rough idea. The 4650 should beat it by about 40%.

the ati is a bit better, I would think 20% if the GT120m is just a rebadged 9600m gs. not sure about that though

mobile cards are never as powerful. a laptop card with desptop 4650 performace can be considered almost high end. the "m" versions are certainly going to be weaker

id grab the ati card one. i think benchwise its better. both cards are suppose to be upgrades to the n80 that has a gforce 9650 gt.

In case you didn't know, the upcoming ATI Mobility 4000 series will have the same amount of power as the desktop cards, with the main difference being lower clock speeds.

In those particular laptop models, the Nvidia card will have slower DDR2 memory, so definitely go with the ATI card.

    They both have GDDR3 RAM.

It's hard to say which card will be better if one of them hasn't even been released yet but that ATI card is very impressive for a 14" notebook. I'm thinking about getting the same series ASUS but I'll wait to see what the Nvidia card can do first.

9600m gs is roughly equal to a hd3650, so a hd4650 with triple sps will obviously beat it then.

XoticPC is an official retailer of Asus computers, so they know their stuff.
