alright heres the deal.
I'm looking to buy a Dell Inspiron 6400 possibly, and in terms of video cards your choices are:
Intel GMA 950 (not even considered, piece of junk)
ATI MR X1300 (the upgrade to X1400 is only 20$)
So that leaves only:
ATI MR X1400
nVidia GeForce Go 7300
now the GeForce Go 7300 is 50$ more than the MR X1400, but on all the graphics cards guides I've read, they place the X1400 as the better card, so why would i pay more to get something worse? Could someone perhaps provide an in depth comparison of the 2?
oh and does anyone know if Dell is planning to offer better cards like the ATI MR X1600 on their 6400 anytime soon? Because i don't think an X1400 will be good enough for my gaming needs.

Mmmm, yeah, dell just things the big numbers might trick some people (which it has actually tricked quiet a few). The 7300 is very similar to the x1400, but the thing that makes the x1400 better is all of the technoligies it supports (which the nvidia card doesnt). I doubt they will put anything more hefty on the 6400 in terms of graphics cards, but you never know, they might update a few things when they start putting the core duo 2 in them. If you want something to game on look at the 9400 (e1705), with the 7900gs (you can do some serious gaming on that card). But before I get ahead of myself I'm going to assume that you picked the 6400 because you don't want to go above 15 inch?

The 1400 is better than the go7300. The nvidia equivalent to the x1400 is the go7400, and in most tests the ati came on top.
The 7300 is more of an x1300, but the marketing of it is the "512 memory" which most pple see as the big selling point. Even tho 400+ of that is shared, and only 64 or 128 of it being actual memory. -
yeah... the reason in mostly size and portability.. so want to try not to go above 15.4 inches, but all the same i would most probably want an MR X1600 if it was possible.
oh and liquidxit2, ive already seen that post, thats precisely why i was asking the question (why pay more for less performance?)
How good is the X1400 at handling modern games anyway? Ill be honest the most system-taxing game I own is probably UT 2004, but my good old Geforce4 MX 420 on my 5 year old PC handles it pretty well (medium-low graphics, bout 30fps) with 256 MB of RAM, so i guess an X1400 would be no contest beside that -
Ohh, for something like that you should be alright. But anything new you won't be able to play on high settings. I think the most graphicsly intensive game you could play would be bf2, on low to medium settings. You could check out the asus W3j, its a great little 14 inch notebook with a x1600 in it.

The x1400 is quite a bit better than the go7300 - deffinitely go for the x1400 if you can

aight thanks guys

But I too have been wondering why dell is charging more for less...Must be a name thing or maybe a glitch on thier site.

I was wondering the samething today. Is there a 15.4" that offer X1600 around the same price range as the dell 6400? I know the Asus S96j offers it but it's barebone and i don't know how to put together a laptop. -

You could take a look at the Acer Aspire 5672, which offers the 128MB X1600 for around $1,100, or less on sale.
-
Isn't the 5672 x1400?
sorry, i'm new to this stuff and just researching around. Is there a 128mb X1600 with HyperMemory and a 256mb X1600 wiith 256 dedicated? the latter one is better correct? -

You may want to complete the FAQ in the What Should I Buy forum so we can give you some recommendations.
I'm sure you will find there are quite a few notebooks in your price range that you haven't seen yet. And we can answer all your other questions there too.

haha ya.. i was going to do that in 2 weeks when I finished gathering knowledge of notebooks (very new at this) haha, so far i narrowed it down to 6400/S96j. i'll complete the FAQ when I'm closer to the time of purchase. Thanks for reply.

I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 6400 w/ a nVidia 256MB Ge Force 7300 Graphics card and am looking at returning the computer and getting the Inspiron 640m which comes with the Intel Media Accelerator 950. The 640m is too small to upgrade to a low or mid-range card. I am not a big gamer(actually I don't play on my comp.) at all and mostly use the system for normal internet functions. I do travel and like to watch a movie here and there. I am running Vista Home Premium and was told the better card will help my OS run better.
So my question is, will a simple guy like myself really notice the difference between the nVidia 7300 and the 950? I do some photo editing and presentation type operations but I don't do many things that involve much graphics. But I don't want Vista to perform any less. Are there any other features that may be affected? Is gaming the only main difference?
Thanks in advance for any help! -
The X1400 is better. I used to have the go7300. I was able to play Down of War at the max settings but nothing more than that.
