I have tried to download the new mobility drivers for my Acer laptop and it simply tells me they are incompatible with my system! There is only a 660kb file availalbe on the website and it does not allow me to install the driver files.

I have an Acer Aspire 5562 with an ATI X1400, is there any reason why it wouldn't work with the ATI drivers other than marketing?

Only a few companies are supported by the mobility driver packages, not sure why to be honest, but needless to say that Acer are not supported by the ATI mobility releases, you have to wait for Acer to release their own, or try Omega drivers.

ATI sells raw chips. The individual laptop manufacturers assemble them at their own specs and set the clock speeds/memory speeds on what they want.

Some of them choose to follow some guidelines ATI has laid down and utilize ATI's driversets. Others like to take the raw drivers and modify them to work on their own implementation.

The link you went to is just a "verifier", to determine if your machine is one that should work with the ATI drivers. If not...doesn't mean the ATI drivers won't work, just that ATI's not gonna support them. They don't want you installing them and then screaming bloody murder about them not working, telling everyone ATI's crap, when it might just be that your system was modified outside ATI's normal settings, and their drivers don't account for that, as they aren't meant for your setup.

That said...if you find a direct link to ATI's actual drivers(not the "verifier" like is on their website), you can download them and it will let you install. If they work or not...who knows. Usually they do.

Do some searches and you'll find them. Google is your friend. Many sites don't allow posting the direct link, as ATI sort of frowns upon it...and many try not to piss off the hand that feeds.

Catalyst Mobility 6.6 is nothing speciall, in 3dm05 the score was 4250 (4450 @ Omega 6.5). In 06 there is no diffrence in scores. I guess I have to wait for new omega's to see performance increase.

Has anyone successfully used ATI Tray Tools with the latest Catalyst drivers? I am presently using the 6.3's, because newer ones will not overclock correctly. Either the machine freezes up, or I overclock but the clocks are immediately reset.

Who cares about 200 diff in 3DMark05. Not me at least. That benchmark says nothing about actual performance. It's Just an average based on a few test. Most important for me is having a Good driver that allows me to use my programs correctly. Since i cant start Maya with Omega drivers i sure hope these latest drives work better, so i wont have to switch back to the drivers that came with the Laptop again, becuz they are quite old and have some glitches... I'm off to download now... Wish me luck!

    =))

The same question. I might try them if they work with ATT.

    Cheers,

I've managed to install the latest Catalyst drivers on my laptop with an X1400, however, it seems to give worse performance than the old Omega driver! In 3DMark03 I get 2319 against the 3379 I was getting before.

However, the problem seems to be that the card is automatically underclocking itself. The first graphics test ran fine with a score of about 90fps (same as with Omega), however, the second and third tests both had a moment where the screen blanked out and then the frame rate dropped considerably. They then have a score or about half the fps of the Omega.

Does anyone know why this is happening and if I can turn it off?

Go into the Catalyst control center and click on Powerplay. Move the slider to maximum performance.

Chaz, and others who are interested - 6.6 and ATT - not working. I read the forum posts where a guy contacted Ray Adams, and he (Ray) stopped responding. So no luck for us overclockers.

    Cheers,

    Ivan

That is disappointing, but thanks for providing us with this information Ivan. The 6.3's are still a good driver set and hopefully they will be fine for the latest games.

Only for information (i don't know, if it works on X700):

I can overclock my X1400 easily with Powerstrip 3.63 Build 540 under all installed Catalyst versions (even 6.6).
And it really works; the desired values (here 500MHz core /440MHz mem) are not only displayed by programs like NHC, ATITool and so on... I can measure true performance increase in benchmarks and games (measured with FRAPS) and -of course- the GPU temp is getting higher too! :D (until the fan goes on...) ;)

I'll download powerstrip and see if it works. Until ATI Tray Tools is updated, it probably won't work with newer drivers.

But be aware of the right version! My X1400 only works with 3.63 Build 540. The newer ones can't overclock the memory.

(But i don't know if this concerns the X700 too...)
