Apparently ATI is making the 3870 X2 mobile. Any word on release and when laptops will start having these in them?

Also, would this card beat out nVidia's 8800m GTX?

Rumour has it that it will score like 12k in 3dmark or something.
    Probably a bit better than a 8800M GTX...on par with a 9800M GTX perhaps?

I am pretty much sure it will beat 8800M GTX.

When are laptops speculated for release with these in them?

If you look at pcmicroworks, they are offering a single 3870 with the new 15" Clevo notebook. Price-wise, it is the same as the 8800m gtx. Now, ATI usually offers better performance per dollar, so this may lead to speculations that... perhaps a single mobile HD 3870 is more powerful than an 8800m gtx? Then again, the prices on that site have been jumping from day to day... a configuration that I could get for $2700 a couple weeks ago is now well over $4000. No word on the specs of the 9800m gtx as of yet. Nvidia is claiming a 40% increase in power going from the 8 series to the 9 series. The biggest advantage of the 9m series (only select cards), imo, is hybrid sli; allowing to switch to integrated graphics to save battery life (although the m15x manages exactly this with 8m gpus).

No, a single 3870 is about as good as a 8800M GTS from benchmarks(8000 3dmarks), but nobody saw it in action yet.

Yes, but we're not talking about the desktop cards here. Nvidia had to slim down the 8800m gtx to get it to fit in laptops. A desktop 3870 is still more powerful than a 8800m gtx, and ATI had more time to develop its 3870 for laptops. Besides, I don't think there will be as much resemblance between the ATI desktop and laptop cards as with Nvidia, as I'm pretty sure that the new ATI laptop cards will be directx 10.1, whereas the desktop 3870 is directx 10.

It will be faster than an 8800m GTX or ATI wouldn't release it. It will most likely fit only in 17 inch systems or larger. Anyone read the reviews on the GTX280? what a beast.

its not that good.....did you actually read the reviews....much cheaper cards can almost match it in performance, and the new ATI stuff is not even out yet.

I read 3 reviews. Check out the one on AnandTech.com for a VERY VERY DETAILED EXPLANATION.

Much cheaper cards. The GTX280 is the fastest card available by at least 50%. Pricing is what hurts the GTX280, not performance. AMD will probably 1up Nvidia this round by offering a better value. But I'm not talking about value, I'm talking about sheer performance.

Yes, it is that good. I would never buy one and find it of questionable value, but it really does deliver performance-wise.

We talk about it more on desktopreview.com.

Yes I agree eleron I read the anandtech review, damn our 8800m GTX SLI is almost as fast as that GTX 280 in Crysis.

So I can safely asume the 8800M GTX SLI is still super strong :D

well I hope the 3870 will be at least near the performance of an 8800M GTX since it's been a while since the release of the 8800M GTX and I'm hoping that ATI will get back into the competition so that both will release better cards for a better price =] Well, it's too bad I already bought my laptop though, or else I'd probably want a 15" with the 3870

Is it just me or is the 9800m gtx being $455 more expensive than a 8800m gtx just... perhaps... slightly absurd? It used to be around $150 on pcmicroworks... but now 0.o
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but 40% increase from 8800m gtx would mean... it's almost as powerful as 8800m gtx sli, which are almost as powerful as a gtx 280 XD. So 9800m gtx sli would beat gtx 280 out of the water lol. I'm skeptical about the 9800m gtx having any significant improvements over the 8800m gtx; although why the 1 gb ram? Not even desktop cards prior to the gtx 280 had that much.

"up to 40%", you know what's that mean.

How is your 8800m gtx slow? XD I'll probably get something similar to your NP5793 when I'll be getting my laptop in September / October. Hmm, I saw some youtube videos of people supposedly playing Crysis at ultra high at 1920 x 1200 rez with 8800m gtx sli with frame rates in the 30's and I'm wondering if that's actually possible? As even the gtx 280 seems to be having trouble there.

that is possible, my single 8800m gtx were abled to get 30fps under 1680x1050 heavy firing, all high, 2xAA. I overclocked it tho.
also by that time sager will be selling np5796, which equid. 9800m gtx.

0.o not bad. But ultra high is somewhat more demanding than high, although I'm guessing 2x AA would make up for that. On a 17" WUXGA panel, can you tell much of difference if you're playing 1680 x 1050 or 1920 x 1200? I know I can't tell much difference when I'm playing 1440 x 900 or 1680 x 1050 on my WSXGA+ G1S monitor. Also, does Sager void your warranty if you overclock?

*there is "ultra high" in crysis? I never knew that.
*running games at native resolution look so much sharper.
*overclock doesn't void warranty, however, any damage caused by overclock will.

Ultra high is a mod for crysis that improves the graphics a lot. There's also another one, called natural mod. You can find them fairly easily by googling; I've never actually played the game, so I haven't used these =P. Why do you play with 2x AA instead of native rez? I assume that you could get the same results. This also brings me to a dilemma of whether to buy a WSXGA+ or WUXGA screen XD. Playing everything at native rez vs. my beloved 1080p content :(.
