    Hey,

I'm currently stuck between the Thinkpad T400 and T500. I needed something that was reliable and sturdy but also equipped to do some gaming.

So, the T400 has a 14.1" screen with the ATI Radeon HD3470 while the T500 has a 15.4" screen with the ATI Radeon HD3650.

In terms of gaming, is there a big difference between the two GPUs?

Also, I've always used a 15" screen (last two laptops were 15"), does anyone feel that 14" screens will be too small for gaming?

very big, the hd3450 is comparable to the *edit 8400 gs while the hd3650 is comparable to the 8600gt. The two cards belong to different classes which in gaming capabilities is huge!

You might run most modern games using low-medium settings with the 3450.
You can run most modern games with medium-high settings with the hd 3650

^Thirded - they're not even CLOSE in capability.
    Example:
    Stream Processors: 3470 has 40, 3650 has 120
    Clocks (Core/Mem): 3470 is 680/800 3650 is 600/700 (3650 should OC nicely)
Interface: 3470 is 64-bit, 3650 is 128-bit (big deal, here)
    Memory Bandwidth: 3470 is12.8GB/s, 3650 is 22.4GB/sec
    Texture Fill Rate (Billions/sec) 3470 is 2.72bill/sec, 3650 is 4.8bil/sec
    GigaFlops: 3470 is 54.4, 3650 is 144

The 64-bit vs 128-bit interfaces should be a big deal.

Another, is the fact that 34xx ususally get DDR2 RAM, whereas most 3650's are getting DDR3 RAM.

So, to recap, it's not even close - the 3650 will send the 3470 home crying :)

The 3470 is comparable to the 8400M GS. GT is 128bit.

    okay so just an update...

someone told me that it's unsure whether or not the advertised

"ATI Radeon Mobility 3650" is DDR3 or DDR2.. can someone

1). Explain what the difference is between the two

2). Tell me what the performance difference is?

If anyone's interested, the link to the laptop is here:

    http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/...0019D0:&smid=1BE480ADA7EB421099C1676099E3EA34

It's the Lenovo T500. I'm really psyched about getting this laptop, and just reading the posts above have settled my decision on the T500; I'd hate to be told that the GPU sucks now, haha

As a side note, I know there's a sticky for this, but how well can the Radeon 3650 handle games like Battlefield 2142?

Thanks guys, been a great help

The DDR3 version has some advantages over the DDR2. It is all a matter of the bandwidth and the latency of the chipsets on the graphics card. As a result, the DDR3 version will outperform the DDR2 but will product more heat. It is also stated that the DDR3 version uses less power.

    Bottom Line:
    DDR3:
    Faster
    Less Power
    More Heat

    DDR2:
    Fast
    More Power
    Less Heat

Sorry, i do not have this specific card, but i have one that is comparable
to it. The game should run well at 1280*800, with Some AA and AF.

    Hope that helps. :D
