I'm interested in knowing any games that a ATI Radeon X1270 with 64 MB Dedicated memory from a base Inspiron 1521 could play? Also is this videocard the best integrated videocard or are there better ones for gaming? I am on a strict budget so I'm restricted to buying an integrated graphics card.

That is pretty much the best integrated gpu out right now.
As far as gaming, you should be able to play games from a couple years ago fine. Stuff like hl2, doom 3, bf2, guild wars, wow, etc will play at medium settings.
I have a lower version of that card (x1150) and I can play those games at lower settings fine, so a slightly better card in the x1270 will be able to play those games better.
But don't expect any recent games (within 6 months-a year) to play at medium settins, you'll be forced to play them at pretty much the lowest settings. -
The x1150 isn't a lower version of that card(unless you consider the x300 a lower version of the x800), the x1270 have more pixel pipelines and those are a bit more capable than those in the x1150.
This card should have near the same power than a radeon 9600 or 9600se -
I have an X1270 and am having trouble with it, as it seems to be limited by my CPU...however, I can run CSS at 30 fps, regardless of what resolution I set it to - just not much higher.
Its not too bad, and its wroth it for battery life, but I miss dedicated video. -

Integrated cpus are helped by the cpu so a top cpu is better for gaming with something like an X1270.
-
What systems can you configure to get the X1270 in? I know the Dell 1521 has it... What else?

1721 and 1421 (if there is an 1421) Vostro 1000 as well I think.

D531 has it. Good price for a good warranty and build quality...

i know this is an older post...
but i work at best buy
and we just got a gateway T-1617 and it has one of these cards in it
and when i pull up the direct x diagnostic, it says the machine has 958MB of total graphics memory, and i noticed you guys said it was an integrated card...
i wondered if there was maybe a newer model of this card on it?
because i'm looking for a new 15" laptop with a decent video card in it
im leaning towards the asus G1, but i can get the gateway plus coverage and all that jazz for the price of the G1
just wondered if anyone knows if the gateway has a newer version of the card or what...because the G1 has 1008 when i bring up the diagnostic, so it doesnt seem to be much different to me...
just curious...
thanks! =) -
That number includes shared memory, which has absolutely no bearing on the power of the card. The G1 is nearly 10x as powerful in gaming, and the G1s 50% more powerful still. If you're looking for a notebook, please post a FAQ in the What Notebook Should I Buy forum if you haven't already.

Windows is able to dynamically allocate 958MB of system ram if the need arises (with your total ram taken into consideration).
-
ok, awesome, thanks guys, i was curious about what that number meant
thanks! -

splinter cell chaos theory
warhammer 40k

P.S. What's the point of digging up an old thread... -

Just wanted to update this thread in that I've recently tested out Half Life 2 on the x1270 and it runs it well. All models, textures, shaders, and shadows were set to high detail. The resolution ran at 1280x800. HDR and AA were off. The game ran at a good pace. At least 30FPS I'd say. I dunno though how to do thta thing where it says your minimum, maximum, and average FPS. I've seen it done on half life 2 before, but dunno how to check that. I think it's a stress test or something
Given these results though, I think it's safe to say I can pick up WOW with little worry. Anyone else with experience on this card please feel free to add your experiences w/ games, as I think it seems to run em pretty well (even though i know half life 2 isnt terribly demanding) -
If you download FRAPS, you can run an FPS benchmark with it. Google it for more info.

I came across a problem with the X1270. I play the Sims 2 and i have a graphics problem. Their bodies become all distorted and then the graphics of their bodies shoot all over the screen. I've called just about every help line i caould and i keep getting different answers. The latest answer i got was to update the driver, yet i cannot find an update anywhere compatable with Vista. So if anyone out there can give a little help, it would be greatly appreciated.

ati drivers for vista 32bit
you could also try omega drivers, since they have been tweaked for gaming. -

I ran an Nvidia 7150 against a x1270, and the 7150 out performed it in BF2142, BF2, and CS:S. Wish I had benchmarks to make myself not look like such a fool.
But yeah, it played those games well at low-mid settings, with the exception of CS:S, which it ran at all high, 1024x768 pretty good.
*EDIT* Just realized this is an older thread, but I was responding to the "best IGP out right now". I'm dumb. -
there is some conflict with sims 2 and ati x1270. have yet to try out battlefield 2 and Counter strike source.
i play Dawn of war dark crusade on medium to high settings with high resolutions. not much is really expected of this IGP on my laptop but it does well -

I have a gateway T1616 with the x1270 card and was experiencing the same problems with the game.... heres how I fixed it:
(1) Download the ati driver (and catalyst control if you want) from http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=vista32/common-vista32
(2) Run the file, but once the installer starts, don't bother continuing the installation, b/c it wont install your driver. By just running the file it will create (if you keep the default) a directory with all the installer files (including the driver file) in C:\ATI\SUPPORT\7-12_vista32_dd_55816\
(3) Go to control panel->system->device manager and delete your current display driver (right click on it, remove/delete)
(4) control panel->add new hardware, manually select the hardware to add, selected display driver, then select have disk.
(5) Navagate to:
C:\ATI\SUPPORT\7-12_vista32_dd_55816\Packages\Drivers\Display\LH_INF\
And Select:
CL_55816.INF
(6) This should give you a huge list of ATI drivers to select from, scroll down until you see the 1st entry that says Radeon x1200 series, select it, and it will install.
(7) You will then need to restart the computer
(8) Upon restart your resolution will be really low, just go to control panel->display settings and update your resolution to the desired setting there
(9) Play Sims 2 trouble free finally, I was able to do so with the highest graphics settings in the game is well (I have 2G RAM though as a note), enjoy.
*optional* (8) If you want the catalyst control center to manage your video card 3D and other features, now that the driver is installed run the installer from before, and this time continue with the installation, and it will properly install the catalyst control center as well. -
Thanks for the step by step, i will try doing that today. thanks

Actually, please allow me to include a bit more information.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1521, 2 gig ROM, AMD Turion 64. I love the machine but during play in Tabula Rasa (which I also love) I'm experiencing video lock up. I ran the diagnostic TR support asked me to run and got feedback telling me I needed to update my video card driver.
Will the above fix work for a Dell as well?
