I think an almost 2x bonus on the DirectX 9.0C.

It's hard to say because of the large variation of 8600M GT 3DMark06 scores running around right now as well as not many real-world benchmarks, but I say the 8600M GT will be a better card by a decent amount.

No contest.... The 8600GT scores a minimum of 3600, 3dmark06,and the x1700, in the lower 2000 range. Although not a direct indicator of gaming performance , the 8600 leads by quite a bit.
Also, the processing power of the 8600's 32 units far surpass the X1700.

There is absolutely no contest... the 8600m GT owns the ATI 1700 by more than twice the power. Those 3DMark06 scores are off because the 8600M GT's score of 3600 was done at 1280x1024 and the ATI 1700's 3DMark06 score was done at 1024x768. If you do the 8600m GT at 1024x768 (with the Asus G1s), you get a minimum score of 4400+ with overclocking at over 5000. Don't get me wrong the ATI 1700 score is okay and can run a lot of games really well, but it certainly isn't near as good as the 8600 GT...

in direct x 9, the 8600gt is still going to outperform an x1700 by maybe 1.7:1

plus the x1700 cant run direct x 10 at all, that should increase performance (or visuals) over direct x 9 by maybe 1.3-1.5x? who knows

The 8600M GT is almost (almost) twice as powerful as the X1700 in terms of 3DMark scores. That doesn't exactly translate into twice the real world power in a game, but it definitely means a big improvement over the X1700.

the x2500 compares to the 8600m gt the same way that an x1700 does, since they are the same card.

the 8400m gt is comparable in performance to the x1600/x1700, with the real draw being that you can put it in a smaller, more portable notebook.
