    Hi,

I have decided to buy a Compaq Presario V2710 with ATI's IGP GPU and 1GB RAM. As I do not presently have the notebook to test its compatablility with certain games, do you think it will be able to run current gen RTS games such as:

The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth II
The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth I
    Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War
    etc.

Has anyone actually tested (particularly LOTR: BFME2) on a laptop with the ATI Xpress 200M card? Will it be able to run at reasonably good settings (not lowest settings)?

    Thanks for reading

It will run, just don't expect killer fps on anything above medium. BTW there already is a rather lengthy thread on the 200M.

i had the 200M and i hear its almost the same as Intel's GMA 950. I tried to play Quake 4 on the 200M and it was terrible!!!

The X200M is considerably better than the GMA950, actually. Unlike the GMA, the X200M is based off a real GPU and is much better at processing 3D.

no it is significantly faster then the gma950. RTS games dont work on FPS. SO if you have the ati200m and the rest of your specs are good then you should be fine. I ran empire earth on it , and those games require ALOT of ram. I would just make sure you have the fastest and most ram your system can handle, as well as a beefy cpu and it will more then make up for the 200m. I know from experience as my averatec2155 gamed OK ouyt of the box. But when I went to a 2.2ghz turion (from 1.6gh) and to 2gb of ram (from 512) it was a whole different pc when it came to gaming and anything else.

    OK thanks guys!!
My CPU is cheap and slow though (1.8GHz Sempron, not Athlon), but I hope it passes the 1.6 GHz minimum. Do u think i wll still be able to run it with a lousy Sempron 3100+ processor??

I have 1024 MB RAM and 60GB Hard Disk so I should be fine for system memory and space.

Sylvian, let me know after u test it :D Thnx a lot!!!

I had a bad experience with the 200m when I was deployed in new orleans. the notebooks we were given to use had 1Gb of ram and the 200m. we tried to watch movies on them but the video was always choppy. never could figure out why but we assumed it was the vid card because the notebooks didn't have much else running on them.

The processor won't be your bottleneck - the Sempron 3100+ isn't that bad of a CPU, so it should be fine.

    Thanks Chaz,

You guys have given my dream of gaming on my budget laptop a reality. Thanks for your time and effort!

And thanks Chaz for the awesome system requirements and driver update links (its much faster and more detailed than Microsoft's Game Advisor).
