I'm buying an ATI Rage video card to put on a Linux computer. I checked ATI's site and I can't find drivers for it. Where can I find them. Or do they come preinstalled or something? Thanks.

hello. It is a difficult journey to find 3d acclerated drivers for like almost the first 3d board ati made.

I have a pentium III that i don't use anymore that had a ATI Rage Pro (MACH 64) on it -- running openSUSE 10.2. The only way i have found to get 3d accleration is to install a kernel driver and a special Xorg server, which is so old it is based on XFree86. It's not worth it. I didn't try it.

However, the standard 2d drivers included in Xorg will drive the card fine in 2D.

Pretty much any video card under linux is capable of 2D support without special drivers @ good resolution and color.

Why an ATI Rage anyway? There are wayyy better cards for just a few dollars more )

It may work, but are you looking to simpy to 2D display work or actually something 3D accelerated?

But like lmabchop says why a Rage anyways? I had a Rage Fury Pro (along with a AIW 128) eons ago , and they're not supported anymore, not even in windows; however with the open sourcing of ATi/AMD drivers for the R9xxx to X1K series of cards, why not get a cheap Radeon 9000 or X300SE for $10 at a computer depot?

If it's just for a command line style display it'll be fine, but for anything remotely serious a $10 upgrade is worth it more than the hassle of trouble shooting that dinosaur.

yes, out of the box with any decent distro....

    what distro are you using?
are you going to be playing video?
    what content?
what are the computers specs? (Processor, Memory, AGP slot speed (1x,2x,4x,8x), and chipset.

Cheapest possible? A Rage should not cost anything. You could easily get an old card on e-bay for 10 dollars that'd still be light years ahead of such ancient tech as the Rage....
