x300 < 9600 < 9700 < x600
I think....
9700 is definitey better than the x300, as I heard that the x300 is a toned down verison of the 9600. -
I used to think so too, but apparently it's X300 << 9600 < X600 << 9700 < X700.
With < indicating a minor difference and << indicating a major one.
Still not sure about this and will accept any corrections. -

X600's just a 9700 on PCI-E.
But the performance difference between a 128MB dedicated X300 and a 64MB 9700 is going to be slight, but probably in slight favor of the 9700. The 64MB is really crippling, though. -
Apparently, you are right. In the desktop department, 9700Pro is very close to 9800Pro and the X600Pro/XT is basically the PCI-E version of 9600Pro/XT. But for the Mobility line (which is what we are discussing here), the 9700 specs were severely cut down (in fact it's much closer to a desktop 9600 than to a desktop 9700), while the X600 specs basically remained roughly the same, so indeed performance is similar. The X600 might even win.

Yes - the Mobility X600 is the Mobility 9700, just on a PCI-e x16 bus. There is zilch performance increase between the two, although the X600 laptop would probably be faster because it will be in a newer laptop...
As pulp says - 64MB really cripples the GPU. You need 128MB or more to play the latest games at any sort of decent resolution or settings. I know that in FEAR, with a 64MB card you can't set above low settings at 640x480 resolution without running out of video memory.
"ATI X300" V.S "ATI mobolity 9700"
