At Circuit City today I found an Acer 5100-5840 (that's what it was listed as) with an ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 card in it. Under the display settings, the card showed 256MB dedicated memory (and about 80MB shared), and Curcuit City advertises it as a 512MB card.

As far as 3d performance, will this card be like any other Xpress 1100, or will it perform as well as a dedicated 256MB card (x1400, Nvidia Go 7900)?

    Thanks

It will be like any Xpress 1100, the memory difference on it won't help much buts its a step up from any Intel Integrated offering.

-It will not be more powerful than the x1400.
-It will definitely not be more powerful than the 7900.

Take a look at the GPU comparison charts.

Comparing the X1100 and the 7900GS is quite literally like comparing a twig and a sword. :D

Just bought 5100-5840. 400MHZ DAC with 256meg dedicated ram. Flight Sim 2004's ok as well as battlefield 1942 and COD. Would try COD2 but lost install CD code. Oh yea 160 Gig SATA 5400rpm drive.

It will run them - but not very well.....maybe stick to BF1942 and the original COD...while they will run it will be at low settings, but that doesn't bother some people, depends on your opinion...

    No. Just refer to this.

If you're planning on playing games like CoD2, Far Cry, CnC3 at medium-high setting with a decent resolution like 1024x768 or 1280x960, you'll need a decent GPU like the Mobility Radeon X1600 or Geforce Go 7600. Or just pick any one of those "Performance video cards" in the link I gave you.

it's not dedicated.. it's Vram or something of 512 .. and have 2048mb ram.. and it makes that 256 video or something.. it's like dedicated but intergrated and slower then dedicated. do any retail stores have the x1700 card in it? like Circuitcity, bestbuy??

All Xpress 1100 and 1150 GPUs are shared. None of them are dedicated. Not that I know of any. But I'm pretty sure they're not dedicated. They're not actually supposed to the called GPUs. They're IGPs.

Dump the X1800. Look for a Geforce Go 7700 if you want something near that. If you're mad about speed, get those 17-19" mammoths with Geforce Go 7900/7950 GPUs. But it's actually better to wait a month or two. The mobile versions of the Geforce 8600 will be out very shortly.

It's still a GPU. It stands for Graphics Processing Unit. Doesn't matter if its integrated or dedicated, it still serves the same function. So it's not wrong.

You can get dedicated versions of those cards, yes, just like you could get dedicated versions of the X200 on which they are based, but the fully shared are more common.

The X1800 is better then the Go7700. Its almost the same as a Go 7800GTX

I know the 7600 is a pretty fast card... I can get a dedicated with 512 at the store... or is the new dx10 ones gonna smoke it?
