I'm thinking about purchasing an HP with ATI Radeon XPRESS 200M. How good is this graphics card? I'm not a hard-core gamer, but I would like to play games like counter-strike and call of duty. Would this card be sufficient??? ANY comments appreciated! :)

You should be able to play counter strike and call of duty 1 fine and call of duty 2 should be playable on medium to low settings. I have a Xpress 200m on my Thinkpad R51 and I can tell you that they are not good graphics cards but they are cheap! The only game I play is Rome Total War which is fine on medium settings.

the X200m on the HPs come with 128MB dedicated, so they are more powerful than other x200m's. so your should be able to play both games fine at high settings if you keep a reasonable resolution. (My dad has an X200m on his HP dv5000z and it plays both these games fine)

Not all of them HP models have the 128 dedicated version of the x200 so u better nake sure.. (some have the 32mb dedicated+96 shared version). Its usually the ones that are a little dearer than the standard model and have the better cpu's...

I think the dv5000 series still has the 128MB dedicated version, and so does the older, discontinued zv6000 series.

The X200M (128MB) should be able to play almost all games (except perhaps F.E.A.R. or Doom 3) at low settings and with 1GB+ of RAM.

The Radeon Xpress 200M IGP can have up to 256 MB of memory (some shared) depending on how much RAM you have and the model of the card. The amount of video memory can be set in the BIOS.

Not all the dv5000's have the 128mb dedicated version!.. I know this from expensive research and that i sell them for a living. Only 'above basic' models have the fully dedicated version and the cheaper ones only have 32mb ddicated. FACT.. So if your buying one, make sure you dont get the basic setup to avoid being stuck with the inferior card

ANd yes the aformentioned version of the x200 with 128mb dedicated memory also takes a furhter 128mb from the main memory but this will not result in much better performance as the gpu simply isnt powerful enough to make use of it.

I disagree Fishy. Why wouldn't ATI publish the different versions of the 200m? It just doesn't make sense. If you are going to sell a product that has differences in performance they would list them. I have not found any sources outside of message boards that say there are different types of the 200m. I think it gets confusing because different computers, depending on their set up, will run the 200m at different levels.

the 200m is one wierd card!!!
here are all the versions that i know of:
    1. 32MB Dedicated + 96 Hypermemory (shared). 3dmark03 score: 959
    2. 64MB Dedicated + 64 Hypermemory (shared). 3dmark03 score: 1022
    3. 128MB Dedicated + 128 Hypermemory (shared). 3dmark03 score: 1286

    there you go!
now all these cards have been tested with 1GB of system RAM. and All the cards have been tested only with their dedicated amount of RAM, because the hypermemory with the 200m is quite useless. only 20~30 more marks in 3dmark03

    EDIT: Just a referrence:
    My Desktop ATI Radeon 9550 128MB AGP 4x 3dmark03 score: 2250

this oughta show ya how 'weak' the X200m is, yet here is the GMA950 3dmark03 score: 956, so that shows how powerful it is compared to other IGP.

    here is x200m's older brother:
    ATI Mobility Radeon X300 128MB+128Hypermemory: 3dmark03: 2861

Those figures for the X200 are sooo wrong for the 3Dmark03! The x200 gets those scores in 3DMark05! And theres no way the x300 is that far ahead of the x200 in the 3Dmark03 tests!
