Are you using the drivers for desktop cards or for laptops? Sounds like you downloaded the desktop driver.
The Mobility Catalyst drivers are what you want. -
How did you get 6.2 anyway? I thought 6 stands for 2006. 2 for the second month in a year - february? As far as I know there is only 6.1 available:

my mistake.
Also It would seem the visual quality does not match the quality of my AGP gfx card on my desktop even though I set detail settings to max on BF2 and quake4
Is this due to the fact the X700 uses shader model 2? -
Try with these http://www.omegadrivers.net. I've been using Omega drivers for a good while now and they've always been the best drivers for me.
-
also, my natvie resolution is 1280x800 yet i can only set the rez on BF2 to 1024x768 max
why is this? does BF2 even support widescreens? -
Check here:

Hope it helps, -
that increases my resolution, but the screen still looks stretched like 1024x768 however the pixels are perfect (native resolution)
any other suggestions? -

You can set custom resolutions. I don't know how . . although, I'd assume the informatin is easy to find.
The display will always be blurred unless it is in its native resolution.

I installed the latest catalyst drivers.
BUT
Every time I switch on the PC, I get some error message and my ATI folder opens up.
The error message comes from the ATI software that came with the drivers - When I try opening it from the shortcut on the desktop, I get the error message.
How do I fix this? -
You need .NET framework in order to run Catalyst Control Center.

Or just don't install CCC. But .NET framework is a good thing to have. More and more apps need it.
Cheers,
