I am still trying to decide which notebook to keep. I have a Sony SZ340 with Core2duo 2.0 ghz, 2GB of Ram, and the Nvidia go7400. I also have a HP nc6400 with CoreDuo 2.0 ghz (not core2) 1gB of RAM, and the Ati x1300. I believe both have 128 MB dedicated video ram.
Obviously the Sony with a better processor, double the RAM, and better videocard is better.
-CS source plays about 10-20 fps faster on the Sony, but both are fine.
-Company of Heros works on both, but the Sony loads much quicker and can be played with much higher settings.
- I didnt try much else, and dont play that much in general.
Can anyone guess how the HP would be if I bought it with the Core 2 version and 2 GB of RAM? The reason I ask is that I like the HP better but I would repurchase it with the Core 2. Unfortunately, I dont have any other choices for the videocard.

Guess: better.. but if you have to replace both sticks of ram, cost: $230, and the processor if possible cost:$300, for a total of $530 in addition to the price of the initial notebook aproximately $2000 equals..2530!?!?! holy geezuz. Ya, it's magnesium..and it's got some style, but that's highway robbery. So ya, it will perform better, but it's not worth it to begin with IMO. Why are you fixed on these two? Have you considered an Asus A8jp? which is way faster for only $1299, Asus G1, or Asus W3J ?
edit: oh i see you already HAVE them in hand. If it wasn't too late, i'd trade em back in. or stick with the sony
also, i think the gpus are both 64mb., 128 hypermem. Dont' quote me though. -
Thanks for the quick reply. I should've mentioned that I like these two because of the docking stations they offer. I really like the ASUS, but no docking!
I guess my question should've been, how would the HP compare to the Sony if all specs were equal except the videocards? Charts show the nvidia 7400 to be better than the ATI x1300.
The reason I ask is becuase the HP is noticable slower than the Sony in high end games, but I didnt know if that was due to the videocard alone, or the difference in RAM and processor. Thanks again. -

The video card is the bottleneck in your games, not the processor - both CPUs are very, very fast. I'm not sure how RAM intensive those games are, but you could experiment. Take the RAM out of those notebooks and swap - see how the HP does with 2GB and the Sony with 1GB.
I would keep the Sony if you plan to game. The Go7400 is the faster card regardless, and probably by a noticeable margin. -
It didnt occur to me to swap the RAM, I'll give that a try and post my results.
ATI x1300 (hp) vs Nvidia Go7400 (sony sz)
