Dell make good laptops I can recommend them as I got the 9400 (which is a desktop replacement lappy) about 2 years ago and is still doesn’t miss a beat but now are looking for a replacement as the nvidia 7900 in it doesn’t pump out the fps in today’s games as it used to.

What I’m looking at getting is ATI's new XGP which is only out in one flavour ATM:

    http://www.fujitsu-siemens.com/home/products/notebooks/amilo_graphic_booster.html

What it will mean is you can have a really light/thin laptop that runs really cool but also once you plug the external card in you'll have desktop performance in games. (without incinerating your nuts if you play with it on your lap)

I’m looking for something a little faster than the "graphic booster" that Fujitsu Siemens has so I’m waiting patiently for other manufactures to incorporate this tech.

    It's an awesome idea, but I don't know, we've been waiting years for...something :-/

Bad thing about trying to find a replacement for that 7900GS is how few laptops actually have something better! (Although in a way at least it's still modern! :D )

This notebook is already on sale. Some folks in the Fujitsu forum already got their hands on it and benched them. The only bad thing bout it is, you can't route the 8000 3dmark06 power back to your laptop's lcd.

you mean you can’t play games on the laptops screen through the external card?

If that is the case it sucks indeed and I really hope that other manufacturers don’t do the same thing because they will lose allot of sales because of that, including me.

Well, so far nobody has been successful in making an external video card, so nobody is losing sales. Somebody will gain tons of sales if they manage to make it work.

    meh....

Why are people so excited about these things?

    Reasons:

    1. Make the laptop lighter by lessening cooling, etc.
    You are lazy.

    2. Desktop power when at home.
    Get a desktop.

    3. Woah cool, where do I but it.
    No, just no

I'm excited because it can potentially give any laptop with the required port and bandwidth the gaming power of a gaming notebook, including smaller notebooks where people do not want the size and weight of gaming notebooks.

Since the GPU is external, the notebook will not heat up while gaming. Sometimes it can get uncomfortable gaming for a while on a gaming notebook. I'll bet you will also be able to overclock the GPU further since it is external.

If implemented, upgrades could also be much easier than the current MXM standard which is only for a few notebooks. I'd love to be able to crack open the box, and swap out the GPU for a new one just like in a desktop.

Some cannot afford both a desktop and laptop and some do not want a desktop and cheap netbook. I myself would prefer just one computer and that being a notebook but also being able to game without it being too bulky. A 13" notebook with an external GPU is still much more portable than a desktop.

This may sound impractical, but I'd love it if we could also have the option to use desktop GPUs externally on a notebook, I wouldn't mind paying a bit extra and coping with extra weight.

Just as some find netbooks to be a gimmick whereas many others find them to be invaluable, I feel the same applies to this ATI XGP and external GPUs. I hope this year, we can see it spread to many more notebooks and also have a solution for Intel notebooks since the ATI XGP is limited to AMD Puma notebooks by agreement.
