Just got my new Sony FW490 and it has a 4650 1GB GPU. Anyone recommend a good place for me to download the latest/best driver?
thanks

If you don't like Sony's support for your driver needs you can always just download the latest desktop drivers from ATI and use mobility modder to make them compatible with your mobile GPU.
-
Yes go to Ati website, download the latest drivers, then you have to mobilty mod them to work on your laptop.
http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php
Follow the directions, or you can use mine,
Click on the downloaded drivers, after its done extracted cancil the installations. Start up mobility modder, browse for the ati installation. It should be under C:\ATI. Click on the driver folder. Let it mod it, then when its done go into that ati folder and look for the setup file. Then just install the drivers. It might say these drivers aren't digitally signed, continue anyway.
BTW: Make sure you DISABLE UAC. (For that just run the mobility modder and check the box DISABLE UAC and it would ask you to restart.
Good luck, feel free to ask me any questions. Sorry for the typos iam in a rush -
Mobility Modder does not support 4xxx series cards
-
I used Sony Support to download all the drivers, but I just wanted to make sure there isn't something out there thats better.
-
Which driver did you download off Sony Support's website?
-
I think they updated the mobility modder in may so it shouuld work
-
Took a while but found this thread about this graphic card hope it helps: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=4921030 (see the last post)

whats with the modder? why doesn't the driver from the ATI website work?
-
because they are for desktop cards. which is why you need to use the mobility modder tool
-
So I followed your directions, how do I know if I successfully modified the driver? Sorry for all the questions, but I don't usually mod things -
Update:
So I followed the directions correctly, even the mod program said it was complete. I restarted the computer and finally found out that the drivers are still version 8.5
can anyone help me? -
Did you uninstall your previous driver and run a driver cleaner before you tried to install the new modded driver?
The mod program says it is complete: which means it is done modyfying the desktop ATI driver for your laptop. At this point you still need to install these new drivers. The mod tool doesn't install them for you. -
I did not uninstall the previous driver, honestly I'm a bit worried that if something doesn't work, I'm screwed. Sony didn't give me any backup disks and wanted me to burn my own.
-
Well I tried it and nope the current version of DH Mobility Modder doesn't work with the HD 4xxx series. When you run setup after modifying the drivers the display drivers won't even load as an install option. So it looks like it is just vendor specific drivers for now. I tried it after doing a clean install of the OS, so there was no issue of previous driver files lying around.
