yea, that happened to me too, i have just about the same machine as you, except a 1.83 cpu.

I gave up after trying to overclock with ATITool, but i think that the other program (powerstrip?) might work better

i have a 7800, and use coolbits, which also has a "find" button. it usually works fine for me, unless i try and use it when it is already overclocked-then my system crashes! so don't go using that button if your overclocked already! also, how long did you wait after your screen went black? maby you need to wait longer. Can you set the speeds manually? if so, then you could either do trial and error (always error on the side of caution, go in small incraments, keep an eye on the temp) or google and find speeds that worked for other people.

coolbits is just a registry hack that unlocks hidden utilities in the forceware drivers, it wont do anything for an ati card

i thought coolbits was only for nvidia cards anyways. and the screen goes black almost immediately. i wait a couple seconds to see what happens, but then i just turn it off. when i restart and open ATITool again, it says that it didnt close properly and the highest clock it got, was only 1 point higher than stock
