I read somewhere that this card isn't DX9, and that it is just a rebranded X1700. X2500 > X1700? DX9 or DX10? Can the 2500 run Vista smoothly? What about games like Crysis, Lost Planet, Halo 2, etc? Help

It indeed is DX9, as was the X1700. I believe you meant it wasn't dx10 capable, which again is true. The dx10 cards from ATi have a HD prefix. As in HD 2xxx series. It would run all those games, probably at medium settings. The dx10 effects wouldn't be available, though. Vista Aero is a cinch. It doesn't even tax integrated cards above the GMA 950. Which is pretty much all cards out there today.

ok well this brings me to my next question: Acer 4920G or Compal IFL90?

    Acer:
    Intel C2D T7100
    2GB RAM
    ATI Mobility Radeon X2500
    160GB HDD
    14.1" glossy WSXGA screen
    DVD+/- RW etc etc
    $1250

    Compal:
    Intel C2D T7100
    1GB RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT-M
    100GB HDD
    15.4" WSXGA glossy screen
    DVD+/- etc etc
    $1370 (approx)

No, the X1700 is the X1600 with minor differences and no changes in the performance.
@teflon : Definitely go for the Compal, it has a better build quality and it is DirectX10, the X2500 is not a DirectX10 GPU.
Though upgrading the memory might not be a bad idea, if you are going to use Vista, it's going to take a considerable amount compared to the XP.

well i'll be using XP actually but I might consider dual booting. I meant, which one is better by itself (no upgrading etc)?

XP, Vista is only neccessary if you plan to use DX10, but the 8600 will struggle with DX10 games

well then which notebook, the compal or the acer?
i've heard really bad things about acer build quality and service; i'm hoping the gemstone will be different. however i've been nvidia for pretty much all of my comps so i'm used to it...i guess i'll go with the sager np2090 just because it's a bit cheaper but the same as the compal.

I would go for the Sager for sure. Nothing personal against Acer, maybe they are different not, but my first laptop about three years ago was an Acer....and well yeah I got rid of it pretty fast, just wasn't all that great quality wise. I've been looking into the Sager as well, considering the PowerPro version from powernotebooks.com

Go with the compal and upgrade the memory - if you need it - afterwards.
