Recently I've noticed when I have been gaming that every 10mins or so I will get extreme lag. I think my graphics card is causing the problem. I downloaded rivatuner and saw that was shader core temperature was 2147483520 degrees celsius. Pretty sure it's not normal... does it mean my shader core is burnt out? I still have warranty on my laptop, I don't even know if I can claim warranty because of this :\

there is no separate shader temp for ATI cards & thats why u get the huge number .... as for the other temps what about them how high are they ???

also try to use HWinfo32 or GPU-Z for temperature readings on the ATI 4570

my gpu temp is around 80- 90 when i play games, I put my battery settings to high performance just to make sure I was getting the most power to rule out that it was lagging due to the game not getting enough juice but it still happens. today I reformatted my laptop to the factory settings... that didn't do anything either. At the start of the year when i got the laptop i didn't have this problem, its insanely annoying when playing games.

my other temp readings follow from GPU Z when I have a game app open:
    GPU TEMP - 75 degrees
Fan speed 90% (fixed it at 90% myself with rivatuner)
GPU TEMP DISPIO - 72.5 degrees
GPU TEMP MEMIO - 72 degrees

I have no idea what the problem is now, i was sure it was the graphics card before but after what you said I am lost.

It happens in all the games I play I'm pretty sure. I generally play Heroes of Newerth (a branch off DoTA). I've tested it in GTA IV by putting all the settings on low which is playable and i still get the periodic lag. I'm pretty sure it happens in counterstrike source too, I sit next to a person who is using the same wireless internet as me and a similar laptop specs if not worse and when i get this periodic lag my ping goes up and fps goes down and i look at their screen and it's ok for them. So I don't think its a internet problem.

hmm...... well I dont think ping have anything to do with ur GPU .... are u sure you dont have a virus or a malware that maybe using resources and causing the lagg & lower FPS ?

I think its the other way around, the fps lagg is affecting the ping but yeah. Im 99% sure its not a virus either considering i just restored my laptop to factory settings hours ago, it may be the wireless internet just spiking but when i see someone else get high ping and lag its never as bad as mine when i have the 'laggy period'. I live in New Zealand by the way (worst internet in a developed country).

When was the last time you cleaned out the laptop from dust?
    And I mean thoroughly so?

Yep, updated the graphics driver and yeah I've seen a lot of your posts on these forums when looking for laptop overclock tips etc :D i know you know your stuff, i just don't know why.

And will opening up my acer laptop to clean dust void my warranty? if not, which part do i open up? the large vent or the smaller one? sorry never opened up a laptop before :\

    @MahmoudDewy
Is the Xtreme-G 10.5m catalyst driver a third party driver or something? do you think its better than the latest ati catalyst 10.8 for our graphics card? Oh yea and sometimes the graphics card will crash when watching movies, listening to music too, but will recover... oddly, the graphics card hasn't crashed when I've been playing games...

..Ok, i'm goin to try the xtreme-G drivers, will tell you the results.

This driver is by far the best driver I used in this laptop .... fps wise it is faster than any other driver I used & I used a lot (9.12 modded up to 10.8) I tried them all :D .... combine it with 10.8 avivo package and u r set .... I am speaking average of 30 average fps on Dragon Age origins with 2x AA & everything on high, 22 average fps on GTA IV with med settings on native res of 1366*768

also the best part about it is that you never get frame rate drops .... or u get the minimum possible vs other drivers

as for the cleaning thing you should ask someone with the same casing as you are because in my laptop casing I have to completely dismantle the whole thing to reach the heatsink which will void my warranty

Guys, I doubt this would be related to the drivers the OP is using, unless of course they became corrupted in some fashion.
He stated that up until recently, he started experiencing framerate drops and admitted he never opened up the laptop before.

It might indicate the problem is rooted in the dust build-up instead.

As far as I know, opening the laptop does not void the warranty (although individual manufacturers might have different policies - though I doubt it because cleaning out the laptop from the inside is essential in order to get to the dust in major quantities).
You can open both the larger and smaller vents.
Just make sure to thoroughly clean out any dust build-up.
I advise you do so while the laptop is of course turned off entirely (you wouldn't want to be doing something like this while it's active).

Alternatively, you can buy a compressed air in a can, press it to the exhaust vents and then just push the air inside to clean out the dust.
Admittedly, this can easily push the dust further inside the laptop (which is why I usually open mine).

argh crap, my laptop has the same casing as yours (blue shell, 'signal up' etc etc.), so chances are it will void my warranty :(. I think it might actually be a dust problem, I live in a student hostel and a crap load of dust settles in my room sometimes and i leave my laptop running quite a lot when im not in my room.

Set your options as follows this is the best setup for me in any game always give +fps:

    AA: use application settings
    AAA: enabled, performance
AF: use application settings, High Quality AF: off
    A.I.: enabled, standard
    Mipmap: Quality
D3D: Geometry instancing : enabled <---- this is a kick a$$ feature btw
    OGL: Triple buffering : enabled

this settings combo will give you the best fps in most of the games out there (at least the ones I tried which is ALOT :D )

gl in ur gaming and have fun

one more question. What program are you using to speed up your fan>? im using rivatuner at the the moment but it doesnt recognise the xtreme g drivers and when i turn the fan speed up i dont notice any increase in noise that would indicate a fan speed increase

unfortunately you can't do that and even if you did the 1.2V are barely keeping up with the current clocks so if you go lower im sure you will have problems

Found out why you can't increase the fan speed for the 4570... It shares the same fan as the cpu so if you find out a way to increase the cpu fan speed you will cool the GPU as well.
