Hey yall! im a big fan of the CS series and i probably will be entering CAL (Cyber athlete amateur league) next season. I want to point out a few things though. Is it better to play CS scrimmages with the highest resolution (1280x800), or do professionals prefer the lower resolution.
I would like to have your opinionthanks!

It's been a long time for me, but back in my day (Quake, etc), everyone seemed to use a CRT monitor running at 85-120Hz.
The norm was to try to have the game running that fast and at a relevantly high resolution by turning down all the other options (detail, etc.)
Kills count, eye candy doesn't.
edit----realized that what I said might not be clear.
You do want to play at a decent resolution, but a high frame-rate is even more important. To do so, just turn all the details/options down, except resolution as high resolutions can help with long distance work.
Fast & ugly tends to win against choppy & beautiful. At least, that was true a few years ago...... -
Pretty much what Tony_A said.
I used to play Counter-Strike and later Counter-Strike: Source at a Semi-Pro level, this much I can tell you:
Most professionals or good players (usually veteran-ish) use low resolutions (640x480 or 800x600), but not because of made up reasons such as people being larger (that's not really the case, people become more pixelated, not larger). The reason is simple, they are used to it. Back in the days these were the resolutions you had to use to get an optimal refreshrate out of your CRT monitor and also those 100-120+ fps (stable) that you always look for when you play FPS games in competitions (since lag makes it harder to aim, and can worsen the hit-registration, especially in CS/CS:S). Some not-so-oldschool players who play CS:Source still use low resolutions due to lack of computer-performance to support higher resolutions at the level that is demanded, even if they use LCD screens.
But, I've seen plenty of new professional players at the top who haven't been crippled by bad computers and are not used to old-style settings, these players do play with the same video settings your average gamer would (native LCD res or a higher CRT res). This if anything should more or less debunk the myth that making your game look horrible automatically transfears into more frags unless there is an actuall need for it (old/bad computer/screen).
If you're feeling slightly serious about "gaming" I'd recomend you to look into a good mousepad (Some common brands who make good hard and soft mousepads would be SteelSeries, Everglide, QPAD, Func, Corepad) and a good mouse (Populare ones include Logitech MX510/MX518, MSIE 1.1/3.0, Razer mice). These things will matter more than your screen resolution (assuming you can play without lag on the resolution you prefer). But in the end they all just make slight differences, usually all they really do is boost the players confidence.
Experiment, don't be a stranger to try out new settings or hardware in the beginning to find out what you're comfortable with, but in the end, once you get used to (and adapted to) some settings and hardware, THAT will be your ultimate combination, no matter what other people might try to tell you. Unless of course the selected mouse happens to be an old ballmouse with a no longer working left-click button or something...
Anyhow, good look with CAL, I hope you've found a nice team to play with. -
Cyber athlete amateur league...didn't realize thats what it stood for. Kinda contradicts the definition of athlete but whatever.
Anyway i have played CSS on a lower end machine with a 17" 1280x1024 screen and on a high end machine with a 24" 1920x1200 screen. Now i don't play competitively but i definitely play better on the larger res screen, i guess my peripheral vision is actually put to use and depending on your mouse sensitivity it could take a bit of adjusting but i think you are better off with that.
Its all up to your personal preference. -
Source is too easy of a game.
My friends are cal i in it haha. For me I play source for fun.
I'm going cal for 1.6 next season(if i can find time to be active). As far as resolution I play on 1024x800, and it seems to be fine for me. I don't lower resolution's only because I alt + tab a lot.
If you want, you can download experienced cal people's configs from www.gotfrag.com They truely make you better I think.
Anyways, good luck and we should play some time. Do you have ventilo? -
I actually thought the hitboxes are indeed bigger on the lower resolutions. Unless that was proven to be a fallacy, I am pretty sure lower resolution= larger hitboxes.
Most good players rule of thumb is scrim/pug/match use lowest resolution and pubbing use whatever resolution is prettiest to you. -
how do u actually enter CAL tournaments and how good do u have to be in terms of kill death ratio?
-
Zer0 Acess you can enter CAL even if you are a new player. However, there are numerous divisions in CAL.
CAL-O is probably for everyone
CAL-M is the "semi-pro" league
CEVO-A, CPL, CGS, COTW are for professionals only and are usually paid tournaments that are aired live off HLTV or other gaming networks -
The Reason For Low Res Is Because Your Cursor Has To Travel Less Pixel Making You More Accurate.
The More Pixel You Get The More Chance To Miss.
Hope This Helps. -
Yeah i figured that, but it just seems so blurry o.o
-
Ya Game Pretty Much Looks Like Crap But If You Want To Win At Any Cost Then It's Better To Use Low Res.
-
i think ill stick with my 1024x800 or so...its best for me
-
I realize you said "some" but I just want to point out that I've been a CS player since Beta 8 and I use 1400X900 with 150FPS or so today and I'm almost always on the top of the list... It doesn't really matter what you have it at its all about your FEEL -

Most are Casual gamers on this Forum so they Have all good good 8800 GT etc graphic cards.. they play games like crysis , bioshock etc..
But for CS players like me n u..
let me tell u this..
the worlds best Professional CS players play at no more than 800X600.
The reason is that the enemies head looks bigger, easier to aim, the crosshair also moves faster.
So if u are getting into competitive Gaming then get used to Low Resolution..
BUT BUT .. i have a secret for u..
if u wanna See through the Smoke (when someone throws smoke nade) then keep it to 16 BIT
in 16 Bit the colours will be pathetic but u can see your enemy through the smoke.
Cheers!
Happy Gaming! -
I don't understand the "mouse moving over fewer pixels" argument for playing at low resolution. Just get a higher DPI mouse! That's the entire point, so that it can detect a tiny movement as crossing the cursor across the entire screen.
I only play CS:S and CS to VOIP with old friends from other universities I haven't seen in awhile. The game is fun in a "virtual paintball" sort of way, but I've always been a mediocre player and have never really gotten that deep into the game itself (because it isn't fun unless you are pro). Come on, what game still has you sit and stare at a screen for 5 minutes because you got killed early in a match? TF2/Zombie Mod (for CS:S) are so much more fun.
Every time I log back into CS, I am reminded of how much I hate that stupid, archaic, infinitely frustrating game. Only good for meeting up with old friends.
Only 1 game community has ever caused me more grief: The WC3 DotA players, most immature, bratty, infantile human degenerates ever to defile this Earth. -
You wont understand unless you play Clan Matches or in Tournaments.
Its a Score based game..
its like Soccer..where no one cares how good the Grass is..
all it matters is Which team scores more goals.
No one really cares about the graphics.
I have a Deathadder 1800 DPI & i play on 800X600
even though i can play on 1280X800 & still get 100 fps...
but i Prefer lower Resolution as everything looks Bigger.
& to give a Headshot u need to be able to see a Bigger Head.
on Screens smaller than 20" ... the Head of the enemy looks Smaller at Full resolutions..
BUT If u are using a HUGE screen like 40" or even 24" onwards...
then u can play at High Reso..
Cheers!..
anything else u wanna know u can Ask.
