I am new to the lan party scene, as i never been, seen one. So i have no idea what is required to get the two computers connected.

a read a little bit in wikipedia. it said about me needing a hub/swicth, but if both comp have Wifi i could connect via ad-hoc.

i soon will be having a desktop and i wish to play some simple multiplayer games with my friends laptop.

and does newegg, or tigerdirect sell these type of equipment?

Well, all I do with my friend is click the multiplayer option the game offers, then it gives you your IP address and you give it to your friend, you host, and he types it in and joins. Or you just host and it appears on a list of available games.

You can use a router to hook up all the comps in the party..

Yes, AD-Hoc works but will run slower depending on the cards.
Once you create your Ad-Hoc, create a game in LAN.

No.. it is basically connected to the router, thus they communicate over the router, not the internet.

I just started a LAN party club with a friend at Columbia University. All you need is a switch (I got a 16-port off of eBay for $15) and some games (some networking know-how may also be necessary).

    2 People:

No equipments needed, just a "yellow" ethernet cable like this one:
    http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-25-Foot-Snagless-Crossover-Yellow/dp/B00006I52N
they are cheap, can be found anywhere, officedepot, officemax, staples... etc...

All you need to do is connect both computers via this cable (ethernet port), go through the steps on setting up a home network (tutorial can be found in XP). Once that's taken care of, you can then proceed on playing multiplayer game with that friend.

    3 and up:

You can use a router like previously mentioned, or use a switch.
If you already got a router, just connect all computers to that router (regardless of using wired or wireless). Then configure each computer so that they are open to networking, once they are all able to "talk" to each other, i.e. be able to transfer files from one to another. Then you can proceed on playing games.
