Im seriously considering going and getting this in the next couple of hrs as im getting bored of mmorpg's.
My question is, if I realy enjoyed playing the origional red alert's and all the dawn of wars (their about the only 2 RTS games ive played) will i love this game?
Is it the same as what ive already played....just better?
-
Similar but different. As a matter of fact very different, other than they are all RTS games. SC2 is resource gathering, massing up armies to destroy the opponent, in multiplayer at least. Single player campaign is pretty engaging though.
-
starcraft and dawn of war are 2 completely different RTS games... Starcraft is kinda about using A, B or C unit to mass and just attack.. where as dawn of war actually has strategy as in hitting from sides because armor is weaker... suppression, customizing units with different weapons...etc...
-
I can tell your starcraft skills are limited. Only bronze league players play by "turtling" and massing.
SC is all about scouting and map control, balancing base macro management with army micromanagement, and staying one step ahead of your opponent with unit counter to their armour types. -
That's the other thing, SC2 separates itself by elitist players and amateurs. Amateurs can't really have that much fun with multiplayer. It's a grind. And play 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, etc and other players get mad at you if you don't play like they want you to, or if they're better than you. IMHO SC2 is broke because of this. So is the ladder system. 90% of the time where it says I'm favored to win I lose, and the opponent is clearly better than me. This is why I stopped playing ladder games.
SC2 requires a LOT of time (like hundreds of hours) to play the way it was intended for multiplayer. It caters to the South Korean market mainly since they are the intense fanatics of the original game. Single player campaign can actually be fun, and has a very well done and engaging story line and game mechanic. But at times it can be a grind too.
So I guess IMHO, if you are willing to put in the time to play multiplayer, and can deal with the numerous elitist snobs out there in team v team ladder games, then you will do ok. I have fun when playing with friends for fun and with some mods. The SC2 game night was fun with those games, but too intense for the regular ladder games. In the end though it is more about massing lots of units and charging forward, except for those that are master micro managers.
If you like single player games, then the campaign is really worth the price of the game alone, though.
One more thing that bothers me. You hear all the time how well balanced the game is, which is laughable. Every patch they change the characteristics of units, so to me, it clearly isn't well balanced. -
I honestly found the SC2 core game play similar to C&C series. I was a C&C fan and found SC2 absolutely awesome. If you liked Red Alert you will love SC2.
-
also u dont have to play ladder ...there are hundereds/thousand? of custom multiplayer games wich i can only describe as mods..user created objective maps ...tbh i probably play tht more then ladder

niffcreature ex computer dyke
You missed his point completely.
What you just said SC2 is all about, well, its like that for a reason. That reason is because it isn't as advanced as other games that support physics E. G. units taking more damage when flanked. -
I don't think its as bad as you make it out to be. Sure there are a lot of a-holes, but in 1v1 and all the team matches, you eventually get placed in your own league. If you're in lower ranked bronze, you play with and against other people at the same skill level as you and as you get better, the people you play with and against will most likely be at around your level.
-
I still don't find that the case. I've been bronze since I started and am about 50/50 w/l ratio in 1v1. I will have one game where someone is probably playing for the first time, and then next game the person is using advanced tactics and stomps me in five minutes.

Ladder is pretty tough to enjoy until you learn to the strength and weaknesses of each race and each units. Understanding what you see when you scout can give you a huge tactical advantage.

Thanks for the replies guy, think im going to have to get this ordered, could use the single player mission for when I go away next month.
-
Single player campaign is great and long. Should get a solid 20 hours out of it easily. Even practicing with skirmishes and such is good for learning build orders, unit strengths and weaknesses, etc.
-
This game needs to be released on steam... too bad Blizzard refuses to support digital distribution platforms besides themselves.
-
SC2 is a great game since it has a massive library of custom games, which makes the game shine. 95% of my SC2 time is spent playing "team survival" custom games, which are so much fun and it's very easy to turn 30 minutes of set gametime for the night into 4-5hrs
-
Its because they want to have all of their games linked on battle.net. It is nice to have WOW, D3, and SC2 all on one service though.
About to buy Starcraft 2
