Hi everyone
I am planning to buuy a new latop very soon. I am finally narrowed my choices down to the final two latops. Can you guy tell me which one would give me a better performance in terms of gaming? The games I play are Battlefield 2/2141 and COunter Strike and Day of Defeat.
Acer Ferrari 5000
AMD Turion 64 X2, a dual-core 64-bit chip running at 2GHz,
2GB RAM
256MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics processor
Dell XPS 1710
Intel Core 2Duo T7200 (2.00GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 667 MHz FSB)
2GB DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHZ, 2 DIMM
256MB NVIDIA® GeForce Go 7900 GS
Any suggestions would be fine.
Thanks a lot

Both are good units, I would get the Dell XPS 1710 if it were me.
-
The XPS1710 will be much better when gaming, faster processor and a much faster video card. It will run all those games smoothly on good resolution and high/ish details.
-
The NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS totally wipes out the ATI Radeon X1600.
Also, the Intel Core 2 Duo processor is better.
Get the Dell XPS M1710, its the better notebook. Watch out for the price though. -
Well, on the configuration that I have now, they are both about the same price. But the dell does not come with a camera (but i dont use one anyways)
-
Yeah, the XPS M1710 is better then. The graphics card is way better than the X1600.
You might want to wait a bit though? Centrino Pro (Santa Rosa) and DX10 cards are just around the corner... -
nah, wanted long enough already.
The only tihng I do not like about the dell is that is too big. I mean the 17in on the XPS is really nice but I kinda want it to be portable.
If I went for the Acer, what kind of performance would I get from Hardware demanding games like Battlefield?
Do you guys have other suggestions for portable but powerful laptop then? -
-
if you're gonn buy an xps with 7900gs, why not jsut configure an e1705 with a 7900gs? I bet it'd be a lot cheaper.
And if you're gonna go all out and spend 2400$+ on gaming notebook, I'd suggest the Sager 5760...that way you get the best gpu available for notebooks (nvidia 7950gtx) and a webcam. plus I think it looks a lot better than most notebooks and doesnt have the led lights the xps does, which some may or may not like.
But yeah, if you want something more portable, defintely an asus G1 or a8j (for the awesome go 7700 videocard on a 14 inch platform). -
I have just purchased and received my new G1 after shopping around and checking configs for the last month and half. I decided I wanted a 15.4 laptop for mobile gaming. I used to own a 17" widescreen HP zd8000 and it became quite a burden carrying that thing around. I was seriously considering an Acer until the G1 and A8J from Asus caught my eye. They are currently the best 15.4 and 14 inch gamers out there. Once you sift through and disable the unwanted bloatware on the G1, it screams and you can't beat the price.
-
If the prices are similar, I'd get the XPS M1710, simply for its more powerful Go7900.
-
I decided not to get the Dell XPSM1710 due to the large size. I am considering the Asus GI.
Would the Asus GI specs:
Processor: ASUS G1 Intel® Core™2 Duo T7200 (2.0GHz)
Screen: 15.4" WSXGA+ (1680x1050) ColorShine
RAM: 2048M DDR2 667
Hard Disk: 160GB HD 5400 RPM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForceGo 7700 GPU 512 MB
WOuld that give me a better performance then the ferrari 5000? -
Yep, Asus G1 is better than the Acer Ferrari. The 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 7700 is more powerful than the ATI Radeon X1600.
Get the G1, its a sleek machine, and the most powerful 15.4 inch laptop in the market. -
i have an xps 1710. It easily plays BF2142 at near max settings 1440x900 or 1920x1200
You have a little more upgrade choice also: ie can add better processor and graphics card. (albeit the best you can get is a dx9 card Nvidia 7950gtx)
And its very straightforward to turn off the led lights if they annoy you.
Only bad thing is its fairly heavy so not that portable. (but movable round this house easy enough) It also runs a little hot on your lap. So no need to switch on the heating ehh
