I want to buy a gaming notebook so i was looking to get an asus g50 when it was finally released in italy, but it seems it has been delayed or something since it cant be found in any store. Anyway yesterday i found this notebook here :

    http://www.monclick.it/schede/acer/L...g-944g32bn.htm

It has exactly the same specs as the g50 except for the videocard which is a 9600m gt instead of a 9700m gt, but it has a fullHD screen instead of the 720p of the asus. It also costs 400 euro less than the g50.

My question is: is there a significant difference in performance between the 9600m and the 9700m? and, why does acer have such competitive prices? do they use bad ram or drives etc?
What do you think i should get?

    Thanks in advance

Acer has such competitive prices because you have to buy a new one every year. Their build quality it terrible and they use bottom of the barrel components in their PCs. The 9600GT will game very well, and a 9700GT is actually just an overclocked 9600GT. That is not to say it won't perform better, but you could probably squeeze almost identical performance out of a 9600GT with overclocking.

I don't know exact performance difference but check out the specs:

    9700m GT

    9600m GT

Key differences (9600m GT vs 9700m GT):

    Core Speed: 500MHz / 625MHz
    Shader Speed: 1250MHz / 1550MHz
    Power: 23W / 45W
    Connection: Integrated / MXM 3

Otherwise everything else is pretty much the same: 32 unified pipelines, 800MHz Mem, 128-bit bus, same NB9P construction

There is about a 1500-1600 3DMark06 difference, which is fairly significant. However, at 1280x800 res for gaming, there probably would be a marginal difference in performance between the two.

As long as the 9600m GT has GDDR3 video RAM, it's not a bad deal for 400 euros less.

Wow i have just checked those specs and there isnt much difference actually between the 9600m gt, the 9700m gt and even the 9700m gts..but there is a HUGE difference in specs and performance between those and the 9800 series...should i look for a notebook with those? I have never seen those in normal brands notebooks..should i look for sager or alienware?

I would advice the sager np8660, but acer isnt as crap as people think, its just slightly below average, it will certainly last more than a year

I really don't understand why people say acer is just bad. I have had acer desktop's that lasted for years and my new acer laptop has had no problems at all!

I couldn't disagree more. My gaming Acer Aspire 1694 WLMi, which I bought in January 2006 has served me very well. The ONLY issue I've had with it, is dust getting inside! Which is a very easy problem to fix (I blew inside the vent with my mouth lol and tada!)

I'm afraid I have to agree with this for the most part, at least as far as the case design goes - although I would speculate that 2 years rather than 1 is the probable expiration date.

Acer's customer service isn't terrible. They were good about replacing a failed HD under my extended warranty. However, my travelmate has had far worse problems, in that my case actually cracked, the screen hanging on by a single hinge, simply due to ordinary opening and closing of the lid.

Evidently, Acer uses (used?) a high tension hinge to keep the screen at whatever angle the user places it. As opposed to the smooth feel of prior notebooks, the hinges felt sort of sticky from day one. Over time, the tension in the hinges caused the plastic to crack on both bottom corners of the back of my screen. And at about 2 years, the thin piece of metal in the frame snapped as well - leaving the screen hanging on by a thread on the right side.

Disregarding heat issues (when gaming, this thing was hot enough to burn you through your jeans) the *computer* still runs alright. But I can't say I would ever buy another Acer.

Agreed. I've just bought an 8920G, which is quite frankly an amazing piece of kit, and my wife's 7520 is just under a year old and is just as good as the day I bought it.

9600M can not count as a gaming laptop. The performance is weak. Asus G50V with 9700M GT comes with 2x250GB Hard Drive and Intel T9400 are much better for gaming. (information from: www.lynnbay.com).
If you really look for a powerful notebook which can last 3 years, you shall buy a 9800M GT or 9800M GTX laptop.

Well my only Acer experience was the one using my current acer monitor. Have it going on 2.5 years. It broke once (quite dramatic with colors and all). Called Acer, waited maybe 10 minutes to talk to a tech. Shipped it off and got it back within a week fixed and no problems since. So for me Acer Support was spot on :)

Just figured i'd comment on my experience.

Hey, I'm still using an Acer after 3 years after purchase. No meltage, no destruction. Just kept it up to date and dust free - looking after it and it looked after my wallet. In my experience, people who don't tend to look after their laptops tend to be the one's to see it fall apart first no matter what manufacturer it was.

Hope this warhorse has many years ahead of it still, it's about to get a new owner. :)

I think a 9600M GT definitely qualifies as a gaming laptop. The cards you mention are just, well, more hardcore gaming cards. (But most if not all laptops with those cards are 17" beasts)

I've got a 6920G that I've finally wrassled into a decent gaming shape, and I lurv it to bits.
Just needs a component refresh midway through its warranty. :)

Because they are ignorant. I've done 5-6 Acer reviews all were pretty good. Old preconceptions die hard.

The 6920 stinks, but that is because of poor industrial design - CineDash and keyboard. It feels pretty solid.
