So it turns out Activision originally did not want to have Call of Duty leave the WWII setting, as seen on GameSpot.

Well, read the article, and pat Infinity Ward on the back that we're still anticipating MW2. Whoopee!

I just started World at War the other day after hearing how it was "similar" to CoD4 MW, and I must admit just like I thought I like the modern warfare setting ALOT more.

It feels better, weapons are cooler, and I can relate to it more since I was in the Marines.

Leave WW2 games to games like Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising. I plan to get that one but I still liked CoD4 way more than all the others so far and hope CoD6 or what ever MW2 will be carries to torch well.

Probably a good thing Activision backed down or they might have had the IW guys quit like they did when they were with EA/2015 (Medal of Honor: AA). Although I don't know why they left 2015.

Oh yeah, wow, I'm pretty much in awe towards marines. :D

The thing is, the WWII-themed FPS's (and even RTS's) are so 2005-ish (or earlier), and they have to shift to more modern ones since the futuristic themes kinda never really go away (what is it with the future anyway ), or at least that's how I think IW thinks.

Now for some more modern RTSs.

Airborne Assault? Didn't it push through? I thought it did. Or is it another installment of the game that didn't?

Haha, are console devkits that hard to get for them or something? Haha

This doesn't surprise me at all Activision and EA both have a mindset of if you can't make sequels of a game for years to come. Then it is not worth investing time in it.

And this are not my words. A CEO of one of these 2 companies said it in a video. You can look it up. They like beating dead horses even after the horse has been mummified.

Allied Assault. I think airborne was just airborne. But some time after they finished working on the expansions for Allied Assault, I read that they quit and formed IW.

I wonder if we'll get an actual Call of Duty game based on modern warfare.

Say what you will, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, are nothing but Call of Duty 2 set sixty years in the future with modern weapons and vehicles stuck in.

I believe Viscous meant to say that they should leave the modern part to Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising ;)

Oh, wahaha I mixed up Allied Assault and Airborne lol.

But they get me tired already! Joke. :D I was never a fan of serious alien-ated games (differentiating from alienated :D) but I did like the Destroy all Humans games. Fun. Lol

Well, what defines a modern CoD, then?

One that focus on modern conflicts. I don't really see it possible that you'll American and English forces somewhere in Caucasus fighting an enemy with heavy equipment.

WW2 is overdone and most people are tired of WW2 games because there are so many of them. Modern warfare is the way to go that is one of the things that i love about CoD4. With MW2 coming out in a month and you be able to use vehicles like cars, trucks, helis, etc its going to be awesome

Also the aliens in Crysis wasnt so bad even though im not a sc-fi fan at all the game was still fun anyways

I have to agree MW felt more fun than the older CODs. I felt this game really put your in the shoes of a soldier, and you felt the fear and excitement of a real fire fight. The game felt a lot like watching a movie, but an interactive movie. This help developed the character, and helped the players live through the character, just like what movies do for us. Games use to do cut scenes to try to get the story moving, but this game used in game dialogues and scenes to tell the story. Obviously they took elements from many blockbuster movies but that's what is so great about it.

I hope they do something new in MW2 though, maybe take more ques from different war movies. COD5 WaW took a note from Enemy at the Gates, and it was too obvious. They need to put a twist in the game play/plot.

I wish they also did more naval/marine type assaults. Maybe we can drive a boat, and do a mission like that. Like do an amphibious assault with naval support. Or, take an idea from Hunt for Red October and have instead of a ship assault, have us use those Navy Seal personal submarines and board a submarine.

What's great about these war games is that there are so many different military hardware/equipment they can use. I'd rather use something that's actually real than play a game like Crysis where thing's are NOT realistic and I don't really feel like I'm part of the game.

I personally believe this would be very difficult simply because Call of Duty has always been a heavily scripted FPS while Crysis has been a sandbox shooter. Because of it's sandbox style, the weapons and suit are designed by the devs to be extremely flexible just for the player's devious purposes, whatever they may be. With that in mind, Call of Duty wouldn't do well with any aspects of Crysis, especially since the series does a lot of urban warfare (especially with modern CQC) which would not take advantage of the Crytek engine's strength for rendering outdoor environments.
