Adobe Reader 8.1.2, upon launch, freezes my whole computer when Use 2D GPU Acceleration is checked in preferences. Is there a setting in the NVidia control panel that I can change so it works properly? It would be nice to have that GPU acceleration; I open a lot of complicated PDF's. I've turned off GPU acceleration in Reader as a workaround, but I'd like to find a better solution.

    More info:
    Acer Aspire 4520
    Windows Vista SP1
    NVidia GeForce 7000M / nForce 610M
    Adapter BIOS: 5.67.32.20.9
    Driver Version: 7.15.11.127

Well, I disabled a bunch of stuff in Adobe Reader preferences; maybe this fixed it:

    • Automatic Default Page Layout
    • Automatic Default Zoom
    • Hardware rendering for legacy video cards
    • PDF browser plugin, fast web view (irrelevant to this, though)
    • Acrobat JavaScript
    • Preferred Media Player (.i.e., set to Windows Media Player)
    • Multimedia operations
    • Verify signatures when opened
    • Check spelling when typing
    • External content (off by default, I think)

At any rate, Reader seems faster now!

There seems to be some kind of conflict between Adobe Reader GPU acceleration and UAC under Vista and how the latter affects temp folder access. To fix, adjust the properties of AcroRd32.exe to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2.

I'm not a huge fan of FoxIt. Printing and display works best in Adobe Reader 8, IMO, despite its faults. People looking for alternative PDF readers might want to try Sumatra PDF or PDF X-Change Viewer (Free)

Just move plug-ins that you don't use from folder "plug_ins" and "plug_ins3d" to "Optional" folder. That will make Adobe Reader open a lot faster.

You can move any plug-in but don't move "Annotations" folder because Adobe Reader will reinstall it anyway.
