All these arguing all because of hype, the biggest mistake Crytek every made was making Crysis' public appearances so early, almost an year and a half before the release date, yes it build hypes but they are usually so exaggerated by the time of release, the game itself can not live up to the "legend"; thus we have fan boy arguing how/why the game sucks, instead of how amazing it is.
I enjoyed Crysis, and yes it is just like any other shooter, but here's the difference, Crysis is a shooter that is NOT horror based, almost all fps now besides some war/historically based fps have horror elements involved. For example, Bioshock, , Fear 2 (upcoming), the game that Clive Barker's Game, older ones includes: Fear, Doom 3, etc, definitely alot more examples but just not as recent. For me, it is a change, not everything has to relate to horror.

I have a system that can run Crysis extremely well but I believe this is a good example of what is wrong with games currently.

Developers focus too much on the graphics and the game lacks anything new, content content content! Or as the OP put it, there is simply no "magic."

Now for me graphics are an important element, but if I had to choose between:

    Average Gameplay or Average Graphics

I would take the second without hesitation, Call of Duty 4 will eclipse this game by a longshot unless you drool at the sight of the latest graphics. For me excellent graphics alone don't cut it, I want gameplay!

The only possibly savior for Crysis is if its multiplayer is extremely good, but the required system specifications are going to keep sales extremely low, so I wouldn't really count on many patches or even players for that matter.

I loved the demo...graphics notwithstanding it is what I have always wanted in a game...awesome military hardware+tropical jungle setting+the ability to free roam+creepy aliens= my dream game. I only wish the damn thing ran a bit better on my setup. I would be happy with 30 FPS in 1024 by 760 with all medium settings but whatever the point of the game is to push the envelope so i suppose I am down with 800x600 and all low settings just to play the damn thing smoothly.

On a second note how do I change between DX10 and DX9 in Crysis? In World in Conflict this change results in a significant performance increase and perhaps it would do likewise for my besieged 8600m GT...thanks!

From the Game Explorer in Vista, right click on Crysis icon and choose "Play DX9".
