Starting today, every old subscriber is able to play Age of Conan for free for 14 days, with the trial starting as soon as the player logs in. July 22 is the last day that you can sign up for the 14 day trial. Notably, you won't be billed unless you choose to re-subscribe after the trial, so you don't have to worry about canceling your account. It seems that Funcom has made a huge amount of changes and added a lot of new content since most of the forum members here, including me, stopped playing. To try Age of Conan again, all you have to do is reinstall the game (if you uninstalled it, obviously), activate the free game time, and login. The 14 day trial starts once you log in after reactivating your account, not once you reactivate it for the trial. Funcom has put a site together to describe a lot of the changes that they have made:

This is an article that sums up why Age of Conan is so much better now than it was at launch:
http://www.warcry.com/articles/view/interviews/6246-Age-of-Conan-10-Reasons-to-Give-It-Another-Look
It looks like every major gaming site is detailing Age of Conan's "relaunch", and how much better the game is now. I'm not going to post all of the articles and videos about the relaunch, but it seems like Age of Conan is being treated like an entirely new game.
Looking at the forums, and reading what people have been saying about the game, it really does sound like this is what we were all hoping for last year. EUROGAMER probably summed it up best: "Conan's second coming... it won't be long before Funcom has one of the best MMOs in the world."
I've got to install Windows 7 on my MBP tonight to try this again. Hopefully, I can run the DX10 settings, but I doubt it. The new DX10 settings do look incredible, though. This really was a great game when it launched, but it was lacking a lot of things, which made people quit. It seems like Funcom has fixed most of Age of Conan's shortcomings, so I'm pretty excited to try it again.

I played it on original release and then again with one of these 14 day passes... I really couldn't get into this game, a huge thing in these games is the economy, Player vs. enviorment and crafting... I just don't feel this game delievered all that much... especially you know after having played WOW... I think I'll wait for Blizzards new MMO or Just play Diablo 2 lol but thanks anyway!
-
Thanks for the head's up about this. I am now debating whether it is worth the time to re-install along with, I imagine, a truckload of updates. It is probably still too little too late on Funcom's part but I'll ponder it over until the 22nd.

It really does seem better, from everything I've heard. There's a bigger community and much more crowded servers as well (partly because of the server merges, but the playerbase seems to be expanding at a decent rate). If you even liked the game a little when it was released, I'd recommend at least trying it again. I've been following update releases and articles about the game since I've been considering trying it again for a while, and you might be surprised at how much better the game is.
-
I'm pondering the same thing whether I should reinstall it. I really like the beginning island but lost interest in it later. Maybe it is worth the install again.

By the way, a new expansion is going to be revealed next month. Ymir's Pass and Tarantia Commons, which were added after the game launched, seem like some of the most unique areas in the game. With the way new content has been lately, I'm expecting an impressive expansion that really adds to the game.

I decided to visit the AoC forums to get a feel for the game from a current player perspective. From about 60% of the 10 pages or so of threads I read AoC sounds like the same AoC of a year ago. This does not bode well.
-
This is one of the MMO's I never got around to trying. Would be interested in hearing some reviews from you guys, not what the developer/publisher has been spreading around.
-
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
I don't think a 14 day trial does much for this game. my opinion.
-
Hmmmm...... $19.99 to buy it online and download. So tempting, so curious.....don't suppose anyone could get me in through their buddy system been reading about
-
Would take ages to get it digitally... 25-30GB... For a game that Im not even sure I will enjoy?
Is the trial smaller? -
Lol I would never play this game again...
Funcom screwed me, but they had to, to keep all their players on that server lol.
Being the first lvl 5 pvp PoM with all the level 5 pvp gear, going around killing everyone on the server. They took screenshots and I was all over the aoc forums. The thing is, what I did to get to lvl 5 was a game mechanic issue and I found it out. I talked to the GMs and asked if it was ok to do it, they said yes.
Then funcom turned around and put me down to lvl 1 and no gear...lol I logged on and I WAS NAKED... -
And you exploited and didn't get banned, only lost the unfairly obtained things. Why are you complaining? -
nope...it wasnt an exploit, it was a fault in game mechanics and the GMs said it wasnt an exploit.
Plus they didnt give me back all the gold I spent lol -
Maybe if they made the game free Id reinstall it, but for now Ill enjoy the 30 or so GB on my HDD.

I agree with the original post and AOC is worth checking out now if you haven't played it in a while. I would take anything you read on the AOC forums with a grain of salt. Most complaints are exaggerated...
-
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
personally, i like games to consist of 99 parts fun for every 1 part confusion / glitchyness / negative
if people are making complaints on the aoc forums about the game, that is reason enough for most people to avoid the thing, exaggerated or not. why deal with mediocre or average with so many great games out there? games are not something you should have to *put up* with. -
-
I think this game had potential, but epic failed on it's release. I was looking for something after WoW and Guild Wars, but the game was crap when it was released. Now that I'm back into WoW casually, I don't think I will be trying this anytime soon...
-
I will once I get my credit card next week (it's needed to re-activate no?)

I've decided to re-install AoC this weekend and give it a whirl. Who knows...maybe I'll get all misty-eyed playing my HoX again.
-
MICHAELSD01 Apple/Alienware Master
I'm probably going to end up reinstalling it next week. I'm going to make sure that I don't miss out. I've been wanting to try AoC again for a while. No other MMORPG compares. AoC was just lacking quite a bit in a few areas that just didn't give it a MMORPG feel. Signal2Noise, can you comment on how well AoC runs on your laptop with all of the performance improvements after you reinstall it? I really want to play the game in DX10, but I doubt I can with my MacBook Pro.

-
I'll be downloading/installing while at job tomorrow then.
EDIT:The instalation is now taking only 15GBO_O -

Did anyone actually try Age of Conan again? I never got around to it. I guess I'll just wait until it's free to play, which Funcom says is a possibility in the future. I'm not really into paying $15 a month for one game anymore...
I already gave Funcom enough money, and that was when the game was half-broken and crashed most of the times that I played. Still, it should be a great game now.
-
I'm playing it on the 2 week trial now. Early levels are a lot of fun and there seems to be a good amount of people running around in game. I'm on the fence about subscribing after the trial is up though.
-
Well I did eventually fire up the free 'please-come-back-to-Age-of-Conan-please-we're-begging-you!' resub and although I've only been a day into playing it I did get misty-eyed. Because the HoX has been NERFED BEYOND ALL RECOGNITION compared to the early days! Not fun at all. Thanks Funcom. I think you're actually doing a disservice to yourselves by offering this free re-evaluation of tripe. But at least I know I can save myself some chump change once the two weeks is over. -
Your power kind of varies depending on your level, all classes experience periods where they're way overpowered (the levels where you get really good new skills), and underpowered (10 levels after you've gotten that good new skill, before it has gone up in rank) during the leveling process.
At the higher levels a HoX can been insanely overpowered... They are still glass cannons and will be among the top tier of DPS classes, but don't expect to tank anything. Played well, a HoX is a great class: in pve they will contribute to dps as well as any other class, and in pvp they are deadlier than a heart attack.
But bear in mind: it's a tough class to play. Takes the right balance of aggression and knowing when to stun and run. The tendency is to rush straight into a brawl, this isn't always appropriate, which ends in a dead hox very quickly. There are a LOT of very mediocre hox's who don't understand this. -
After reading Gamespot's Revisted: Age of Conan I decided to check out Conan via the Fileplanet trial. Total newbie to the game but I'm really enjoying it. Combat is unique and fun and the game looks fantastic. I haven't tried teaming yet however.

New to AOC, for $19.99 I figured why not get it a shot. Loving Demonologist
Lotsa damage and aoe damage. Minion kind of useless at this current stage in the game. Enjoying the game thoroughly despite my friends warnings to stay away at all cost.
Probably will subscribe when my 1 month of free is up. -
What server did you roll on? I'm on Set.
-
hah i played this when it came out, for 30 days, before i got charged for the monthly subscription.. and i canceled it.
Not a big MMO guy.
It was fun though!
If anyone wants an original copy of the game for cheap, shoot me a PM -
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
Really....PM sent

MICHAELSD01 Apple/Alienware Master
You can't transfer copies of MMORPGs, only accounts (though that's against most MMORPG's terms of service).
-
Yeah, don't bother purchasing the game discs. You can simply DL the client. You will not save time installing from dvd anyway since the patches and so-called updates are still huge multi-gb files.
-
FYI. The free evaluation for old subs has been extended for another two weeks.

Thanks for the heads up. I might try it again, I don't think I want to pay a $15 monthly fee, afterwards, so I might not.

MICHAELSD01 Apple/Alienware Master
Now, I'm considering trying this out. Funcom seems to have gone a long way on a game with incredible potential. My MacBook Pro might not run it too greatly, but it hopefully will...
-
It depends on what kind of FPS you need. I'm happy at 20 so my C90S runs it good at 1920x1080. Should run nice on a GDDR3 9600M GT.
I'm re-entering the game. I re-subscribed for a month and I'm happy now. Game is fun and there are a lot of people now. -
sooo tempted,
AoC had so much potential... I loved the first 20 levels.
I loved the concept of the Dark Templar... It just never worked anything like I thought it would.
I expected to do less damage than the Tempest, but I also expected to be a better tank.
Anyone try a DT now.. are they at least a reasonable tank under most circumstances? or is a Guardian or Tempest 20 levels lower still better? -
I'm on the PVE server Ironspine if anyone else is too, I go by Fugrat.
-
MICHAELSD01 Apple/Alienware Master
PVE in AoC?
-
So PVE = practice for the big leagues -
