My roommate and I are trying to play Age of Empires 1 together, but we're having trouble connecting to each other. We used online play, and I punched in his IP address, his game shoes up, but I can't join (error message just says "Unable to Join"). While if I host the game, my game doesn't even show up when he punches in my IP on his computer. Anyone know how we can connect and play?

I remember two main problems with AOE multiplayer.
    1) Firewall Issues
    2) One has a different patch than the other.

Is Game Ranger like Steam? Do I have to purchase/register my game on there?

And our patches are the same - they are both fresh installs. Not sure about firewalls though.

I used to play AOE II over gamespy.com ... play there with people u know, cause others used to hack a lot so no fun. The other one was IGZones.com, better players there as well.

that is for AOE II over internet, so I'm not sure if your problem is over LAN

You and your friend need to download and install GameRanger on each of your computers. Then you need to register and create an account, your friend also needs to create his account, then you guys can add each other to your friend list.

After GameRanger is installed, any supported games found on your computer will be automatically added to GameRanger's game list. From there you can host a game, invite your friend, and the game will start.
