The announcement wasn't scheduled for a few more days -- four according to the teaser site -- but it looks like Alienware's All Powerful gaming laptop has been set free anyway. So, does it live up to the clues? Pretty much... how does a pair of 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M GPUs strike you? No Core i7 listed, instead we're looking at a Core 2 Extreme quad-core CPU at the top end with up to 8GB of 1333MHz DDR3 memory, and 1TB of 7200-rpm disk or a 512GB SSD if you prefer. RAID 1 or RAID 0? Sure. Rounding things out is a nine-cell battery of unstated performance, FireWire, 4x USB, eSATA, ExpressCard, 802.11n WiFi, 8-in-1 media card reader, dual-layer Blu-ray, a 1920 x 1200 pixel edge-to-edge LCD, DisplayPort and HDMI-outs all wrapped up in a massive chassis weighing 11.68-pounds with a 15.98 x 12.65 x 2.11-inch footprint. It's also packing a GeForce 9400M G1 GPU with HybridPower technology that allows you to scale the graphics back to conserve battery power. Prices start at $1,799 for a lot less than we mentioned above.

So basically what we have here is:
    -17" 1920X1200
    -nVidia GTX 280M SLI
    -nVidia 9400M G1
    -1TB Dual HDD with RAID
    -Blu Ray
    -Core 2 Quad Extreme
    -8GB DDR3
    -Dislplay port, HDMI
    -2.11 Inches Of Thick Love
    -Base Price of $1,799

UPDATE: Comes standard with a GTX 260M

    No it doesn't:

Among the configuration delights lurking under the anodized aluminum hood of the starter model are the following:

    • A single 1GB nVidia GeForce GTX260M GPU (upgradable to dual 1GB nVidia GeForce GTX 280M GPUs for your sweet high-end graphic needs)

    • An Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz P8600 CPU (upgradable to a Core 2 Extreme Quad-Core CPU)

    • 4GB of RAM (Up to 8GB of 1333MHz DDR3 RAM)

    • A 250GB 7200-rpm hard drive (upgradable to a 1TB 7200-rpm or to 512MB of solid-state storage capacity [Raid 1 or Raid 0]; users can swap out hard drives by removing the battery)

    • A slot-loading DVD-RW drive (upgradable to dual-layer Blu-ray Disc)

    • A nine-cell battery

    • An nVidia GeForce 9400M G1 GPU with HybridPower technology (the big bonus here on the motherboard helps you get decent scaled-down graphics when you don't need the dual-card megaton firepower; it kicks in when plugged into AC power)

    • 802.11n Wi-Fi

    • An optional 1920-by-1200-resolution edge-to-edge LCD

just saying more then likely will use the same cost of HD and CPU as the m17 :)

GPU will proably be 1000000 because Nvidia is like that :)

to buy a 280 alone from a reseller is like 4xx

So what happened to Ati's GDDR5?

And here's how I see it... it's an M980nu in a 17" chassis but with NO overclocking. One can only hope it runs cool.

I wonder is the GPUs are MXM 3.0.

It should be around $2200, if the only thing you add is the SLI, seeing as how the 280M is being sold aftermarket for $490.

Only problem though is that the card like I got from RJTech is does not have the connector for SLI. Finding those cards may be hard. Hope this helps. God Bless :)

Im assuming it will cost more than the M98 and the M98 is already like $4500-5000+ configured well (not even maxed out just similar to the $2400 Asus W90)

But maybe that one seller for the M98 just has crazy prices.

But I always assume a AW will cost more than a Sager/Clevo, but the specs here are almost the same so it comes down to cost/style.

This one I cant say it looks bad but I dont like how it looks, and I dont like the 2.11" of thick lovin lol. Reminds me of Cadillac in the front and I never was a fan of car looking computers.

The chassis is supposedly a hybrid of the M1730 and old M17x both of which had the GPUs side by side each with it's own fan strapped over the GPU.

    Cooling shouldn't be an issue.

Nice !!!!!!! I am guessing the cooling system sucks the air from the front grill intake and it comes out the back to get nice airflow to the CPU and GPU. Just my guess. God Bless :)

So its a M98 from alienware; somehow I can say I'm disappointed, at things like only 2 memory slots.

Definitely not selling off my M1730 now, consider this is just a refresh...

Well I can tell you that 17" will be preferred over 18.4" especially when it's 16:10 vs 16:9 and 1920x1200 in the 17 incher vs 1920x1080 in the 18.4 incher.

As for overclocking vs locked, you do have a point since Alienware tends to lock out their multipliers. But I don't think we know for certain if the M980NU can overclock its CPU as well...unless I missed something.

Also, considering that the starting price is around $1800 (which is $700 cheaper than the starting price of the old M17x when it first came out) and nVidia 55nm GPUs are cheaper, I'd say hold off on calling this system overpriced. Let's wait until both the M980NU and this are out to compare pricing when maxxed out.

Heh, you would think a notebook that big would have a legitimate number pad, let alone a legitimate keyboard rather than one pulled out of a macbook air with extra keys. The pre-production keyboard they had for it was much better.

Some people will prefer the 17 others the 18.4" there is not one better than the other. I actully really like the 16:9 screen on the 18.4" W90 its great for movies and games alike. More screen space and a more fitting aspect.

I wont miss those vert pixels and will enjoy the larger screen, all that power no point if you dont have a big screen to enjoy it on.

I think really its going to boil down to price and then some will based on brand preference.

Given the past I say Sager/Clevo should be cheaper

Yep, I'm going to wait till a comparison can be made. I mean, if you go by Eurocom's pricing, you may as well pre-order the M17x.

But from the past, we can assume Alienware will lock the multipliers whereas Sager has at least given you a few for the Extreme CPUs. We can also assume you'll be buying the HDD and RAM from newegg or w/e when configuring the AW.

    I asked for a 16:9 17.3" screen with 1600x900 and 2048x1152 resolutions. :(
