Well those laptops are aimed at different markets. On one hand the alienware is less massive, much more portable and still packs a graphical punch.

The MSI is faster but its also much bigger and bulkier with much better sound. Both on stock, the MSI should be 30% or faster depending on the game and resolution.

    NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

The M14x might have some trouble running BF3 on ultra. According to Notebookcheck, the 650M gets around 32 FPS on high and 14 FPS on ultra. They likely tested it with the Samsung Q470, which is a 1366x768 screen.

On the other hand, HTWingNut tested the GDDR3 version of the 650M (which is slower than the GDDR5 one in the M14x) and got about 65 fps on high settings at 720p.

They actually tested it with this laptop: Test One M73-2O Notebook - Notebookcheck.com Tests

As you can see it has a 1080p screen. So the M14x R2 will get significantly higher FPS at 900p...

I've had an MSI in the past and switched to Alienware, far sexier. :p

BF3 can be a struggle for the m14x at higher settings, but skyrim runs like a dream.

No one thought to mention the GT60? Or the fact the graphics card is replacable/upgradable but not in the alienware?

They should both game at similar settings at their native resolution. You'll almost definitely get a better gaming experience dropping the settings and playing at native resolution rather than dropping the resolution to non-native levels for higher graphical settings.

    Pick the MSI.
Much better GPU and a 1080p screen which the GPU should have no problem running.
4GB more RAM and 250GB bigger HDD is also a plus. The sound system of the MSI is also top notch, probably the best there is on notebooks.

    EDIT:
    Too late...
