    hi, i have an Alienware m17x R1 the old model, i have a bad gpu which is giving me only black screens and trouble and i want to replace it with another nvidia gtx 260m, can someone help me which one will fit the r1? on ebay i see the card name with the 96RJ4 letters with the name, i only see alienware m17x nvidia gtx 260m, thanks

    as far as i know, i saw s.one who made a HD5870M work on an r1 :) it would be a nice upgrade :)
    the gtx 260M is way way way too weak to be used any longer :)

    I'm not sure what you mean by "which one"? Do you mean which manufacturer? The Dell one then, of course. As you can see on eBay, the ASUS GTX260m looks significantly different.

    You mean you only see alienware m17x R2 GTX260m? That should fit your laptop. What is your budget? You could purchase a better GPU if your budget is over a hundred bucks (American).

    sasuke256 the 260m in sli is not that weak thats why i want to replace it, the hd5870m is the ati brand right? it is any good?

    maverick1989 i dont know if the r1 can have any better cards than a double 260m sli, with sli i have no problem run games on high setting even shadow warrior runs on ultra, i was going to put the slave into the master but a single gtx 260 will be very weak

    so if i get a 5870 and install it it will work with the R1? even with the motherboard with the nvidia chipsets?? even in crossfire it will work? cos there was a forum where crossfire was giving trouble, bdw how much the 5870 is more powrful then the 260m? thanks

    thx for the info, i will check then, but i will need to remove the integrated 9400m ? and i think i need to flash vbios in case i decide to upgrade to the ati one

    Check this thread. DR650SE lists out a procedure to get those cards up and running. You have to remember that this isn't a hard disk or a SODIMM which is almost guaranteed to work when you plug it in and is very easy to install. So there is a chance you may damage something in there depending on how good you are with electronics.
