I thought I'd price out an Alienware m15x just for fun. A man can dream can't he?

In configuring it, what is up with memory - 2GB for $150 MORE than 1GB (standard)???? For premium memory online (newegg.com) I can get 2GB DDR2 667MHz for $50.

Also, hard drives +$175 for 250GB (almost reasonable since cost is $140, but still it's an UPGRADE price) and +$275 ($189 online) for 320GB 7200 RPM.

I can see a slight price increase, but this is ridiculous.

    What a rip!

Just get the base ram and upgrade it yourself. Companies like Alienware and Apple can overcharge for upgrades because much of their customer base doesn't know any better.

I think that pretty much all companies charge a ridiculous amount of money for RAM ... but Alienware just goes way beyond that.

Agreed. People that buy alienware (present company excluded) aren't exactly the most practical of consumers.

If in case you decide to get an m15x, do just order 1 Gb of RAM and upgrade it yourself :)

It's easy and doesn't void your warranty :)

Does upgrading the ram yourself really not void the warranty?

Sure, Alienwares are overpriced, but if I can buy my own ram that's potentially $300 cheaper, so it might be worth considering.

I would rather say that Alienware is for people that can afford it and if u can't have fun with Gateway from wallmart. Indeed Alienware or at least the M15X has a bad build quality but it offers a good performance (8800 GTX) and it looks great.

i dont think this is important to any of you, but the stock alienware RAM ive got with my laptop can get much lower timings than after market ram, ive tried both... but still , that doesnt justify that high price for upgrades

I've never encountered a major issue with my m15x. Never had to contact CS. Runs as intended and I am pleased. How do I save time and hassle by getting a Sager then?

Sager offers overall better build quality, but there r many people that dont have any problems with the Alienwares but i would say more have problems with their Alienwares than their sagers. Personally i think Alienware looks a lot better though :)

That's how much Apple charges for an 8x4GB stick of RAM.

Apple is probably the single biggest offender in terms of overcharging for upgrades and especially RAM.

If you think about it though, we come out ahead in this scenario, because they can afford to sell us the low RAM options cheaper since they make a nifty profit from the people that are too lazy to buy their own RAM.

Most people who buy "high-end" notebooks (MBP, Alienware) are douchebags who are too rich to care and too lazy to research... obviously there are many people who are knowledgeable, for instance, many MBP and Alienware owners on this site, but for the most part... yeah.
