i have a 9500m gs in my f8sn-c1 and my temperatures are a lot lower than the 8600 gt from what i have read. I think the general consensus is that 9500m gs' run a lot cooler than 8600 gt's.

my gpu temps after undervolting (approx 10 degrees lower than before undervolting):

    idle: 55
    gaming: 70

when i was researching the 9500m gs i came across something very interesting. i don't remember exactly where i read it but someone commented on how no one knew why nvidia decided to re-design and re-release the 8600 gt as the 9500m gs. perhaps the reason was that they knew about all the heat issues with the 8600gt.

The Inquirer, eh? I'll wait some more... It is true that the 8400M GS in the Dell M1330 has quite a history of heat related failures, but I prefer to blame dell for the ****ty cooling solution implemented. No electronic component on a consumer product is designed to run at temperatures in excess of a 100C, continuously. The same goes for the HP laptops. The colling isn't what it is required to be.

Haven't heard of any Dell 1530/1420/1400s failing due to the same reasons, or in a similar manner. If the problem is "heat cycling", as the Inquirer puts it, other machines should have failed with similar symptoms.

The problem is that we don't have 2 identical notebooks with the 8600 and the 9500 to compare. It could just be the cooling system. The 8600M GT in the Inspiron/Vostros are ~55 idle and ~70 load too. It's still a 80nm G84. It's almost impossible that it runs much cooler. The 65nm G96 9600M GS and 9600M GT should be running very cool if that's any indication though

Find someone with an Asus F8Sv and someone with an F8Sn. Identical notebooks, with the only real difference being the 8600M GT vs 9500M GS.

My dad's home insurances cover me laptops since it's for school :)

Okay well, it does not cover it as a warranty but it covers accidental damages & theft. I could still "drop" it if it breaks

My G1S recently died on me. I believe it was the GPU that died because I could not get any signal on the LCD screen or external monitor. Prior to that, ever since I got my G1S, the 8600M GT was idling at 70-75C and would hit 100C when gaming.

Explains why my HP dv9500 with an 8600M GS hits 109C peak while playing CoD4, even on lowest settings...

If I get my laptop back from HP with the problem still occurring, I guess I'll just play till it melts. Would love an HP dv7t :D

I call total BS on that post. I just bought an m1530 with an 8600M GT and even while overclocked to 600/1200/900 it rarely ever goes above 75 degrees.

Can the life of the 8400M GS be extended by preventing the laptop from going into sleep mode? This should keep the temperature more stable.

    Hi Guys
I am quite surprised that people are so quick to decry the INQ
they have been right so many times. yes of course rumours are reported.
but they did extremely well with the Fujitsu Hard disk scandal, and the Capacitor Electrolyte scandal, which actually helped me identify problem parts before any official announcements were made

Yes there might be biased reporters (who refuse my comments when I mention ATI drivers :) ) but hey they are not all bad

I do beleive this problem has appeared on the register too. so expect deveopments to appear all over the web :)

in addition , HP came in first? well HP/Compaq cooling systems have always made me laugh, their desktops have been ridiculous in the past with the worst cooling solutions ever!
a flippin high end pentium III with just a heatsink and no case fan, ,, big deskpro failures there!

There is some truth to the issue. I'm pretty sure one of the original Inspiron 1520's I ordered with an 8600m was defective, it was a horrible performer and heated up quickly. I've since bought a Vostro 1500 and an xps 1530.. both are cool and perform well with the 8600.

They won't announce there is a problem without estimating how many were defective and what solution they want to deploy.

I kinda dont understand is the A2 or the A3 revision defect or are they bouth defected. I got a A2 and is already shuting down my computer when playing game and energy setins balanced or highperformance. I can only play games on energy saving mode. when the graphic is runnying really slow.

so i just loaded Gpuz and found out my 8600m gt is ddr2 256 mb and 128 bit. poop on a rock and crap even !!! i thought it was the 512mb version :( :( it does play titan quest IT just fine and that is a pretty graphics intensive game.

anyway i am off to dell to see about an update rumored to be available for this card. let you know what i find.

Wait.. on my macbook pro I have an A1 revisioned 8600M GT card with 512mb vram bought in June 3rd 2008..

Maybe apple uses their own circuitry or specialized parts from nvidia? Maybe immune?!?

Mine runs constantly at 49 celcius to 55 max that I've seen (not gaming just everyday usages with heavy multitasking) and no problems at all. Right now its idling at 43 celcius.

Are you serious? I have the A2 revision 2.4 Ghz, July 2007 Macbook Pro. My temps are steady around 60 Celsius and shoot up to almost 90 degrees Celsius when gaming.

Man, those new cards must be pretty sweet.

simply for reference, im in ubuntu right now and it is reporting 64 degrees C. when i am in windows it is about the same, and when i play COD4 of COH, it gets to about 81 max. but once the fan gets going it stays in the low to mid 70's.

id be really worried approaching 100 degrees C. that is over 212 degrees F, hot enough to boil water! yikes!

aside from that, i am interested to see what the OEM's and nvidia come up with and what nVidia's $150 to $200 million cut from their profits to to issue will do.

Its up at 55 now and has been there for the last hour... I'm currently trying to sell my mbp and going to wait until the ati cards are put in.

It might be fine for the first year, hell maybe 2 years but that make me worried more when 3 or 4 years later it starts to over heat and it becomes a huge paper weight. CPU, GPU is pretty much the most crucial part of a notebook/computer.

Now that I think about it, do you think all the OEM vendors told Nvidia to keep their mouth shut about the specific laptops/gpu having issues so that it can be more complicated than it seems?

This could help oem vendors with exchanges/repairs/replacements. That's where the higher rpm of the fans come in from some of the oem vendors instead of announcing the specific gpu so it wouldnt be needed for the oem to recall all of the laptops that they sold?

just to make sure people don't get unnecessarily worried, post all the conditions under which u are getting those temps...

    1. Make sure all the vents under laptop have access to clean air
    2. Try and measure room temperature.
    3. Also mention the software you are using to monitor. This has caused a lot of confusion in my case as CPUIDHWMONITOR reports my GPU temp as 12C hotter than TPFANCONTROL... possibly because they'r reading from diff sensors.
    4. The screen resolution you are running while 'idling'.
    5. Finally the model and others can help regarding location of the GPU... generally if they are very close to the CPU, cpu intensive tasks can increase gpu temp even if the gpu isn't really being loaded.

Of course laptops going past the 100c mark are probably defective, these few steps should allow for more accurate comparisions before anyone starts to panic...

It's turning hilarious.. High temperatures are equivalent to bad cooling, not defective chips. The MBP is an inch thick, the 1330 doesn't have any cooling at all for the graphics card, if you discount the joke that is the thermal pad, ditto with the HP pavillions.

Show me a laptop with even a half decent cooling setup that has failed in the same way, and I shall admit to it being nvidia's fault. Till then, the blame lies squarely with the manufacturers(Dell, Apple, HP, whoever)

Yeah yeah, I remember people "defending" companies when other bad parts shipped.
no-one had a go at asus for going cheap on electrolyte did they?
most of those components failed outside warranty so class actions were few and far between.

For Nvidia to report this to the stock exchange means that whatever the problem is. its big and they are expecting to lose up to $200 million.

I am definitely an Nvidia Fan, (not a cooling one)
I dont like ATI's drivers, never have, they have been bad ever since they introduced OPENGL on the Xpert@work/Xpert@Play range.
Nvidias cards have always run great, but its not impossible for this to happen to them......My nephews 8600gs laptop has been returned twice.

oh just to balance it out, my sons Rock Quaddra TI with x700 ATI failed on the graphics card, thankfully within the extended warranty, but now STONE are failing to fulfill the replacement promise Rock made....TYPICAL!

Even on Windows, if I don't force force the fans it will stabilise itself 98~110. I've seen it go up to 118 one time. I run folding@home when I play so the ans are always at 80%+. It stabilises 96~102
