    Hello gents,

Just replaced the 6800 in a Amilo 3438 by a ATI x1800. Some mechanical problems, otherwise all is fine...

...except for the fan. It only runs at low rpm, resulting in fast overheating during games/benchmarks.

Any thoughts? Can't control the fan through tray tools, so any suggestions for a program that gives me some control over the fans?

Sounds like there's a problem with the temperature sensor, as in, it's not reading the new card correctly, if at all. I'm not sure how much can be done about that, but perhaps check the BIOS and see if there are any settings.

    Will do.

    Any more suggestions?

    ...

Other than waving a towel towards the exposed internals, which I pretty much did all yesterday night? :D

    Hey Ice Tea!

Very interesting thread for me. I have owned a M3438G, but I had to send it back to F&S because the fan was not working. So the GPU hit 100 degrees Celsius at 3dmark05, and CPU around 75 degrees Celsius. So my question is, was it working correctly before you installed the X1800?

If it was working correctly I would recommend you to check if the temperature sensor is working on the CPU. Because the fan turns on when CPU gets hot, not the GPU I thought.

If that also doesn't work, try Notebook Hardware Control or Speedfan. These programs can control your fan, but they dont work with every notebook :(

Let us know how you fixed it.

    Charlie :)

    Hi Charlie,

Thanks for the suggestion. The fan works fine with the 6800 but only at very low, constant speed with the x1800. I got the impression that it was the GPU that was bailing out, but I could be wrong (obviously).

I'll give Notebook Hardware Control a try tonight.

    Thanks,

    Ice-Tea

    Hi Ice-Tea.

There are no fix for your problem.

But you can try to disable the ATI service running on background.

Because with 6800Go when you stop NVIDIA service, fan run at full rpms.

Otherwise you can try to edit ATI registry settings.

Can you tell me more about this upgrade? Any problems? What are performance differences between 6800 and x1800?

    Hi Jachk (sounds familiar?)

I submitted the upgrade to notebookreview to be in the review database, but here's a sneak preview ;)

Watch it: pictures still unscaled (bigger than very large).

Unfortunately, I can't try your suggestion as the card is speeding towards it's costumer :p
