Amnesia won't use the better graphics card in my HP laptop :(

I currently can't run Amnesia: The Dark Descent on my HP davilion dv-6193 laptop because it will ONLY use the stupid integrated intel HD graphics card instead of the Radeon HD 6770m that is in my laptop. Usually I just right click my desktop and click "configure switchable graphics" and set a game to "high preformance" and it automatically uses the better card. WIth amnesia, whenever the launcher pops up it only shows the integrated card. Is there any solution to this? I can provide more info if necessary.

I have had similar problems in the past with games like Deus-Ex: Human Revolutions but somehow that seemed to just fix itself when I turned off DirectX for that game.

All drivers are up to date.

Any help at all is appreciated :D

I don't know how AMD does their graphics switching but assuming it is similar to nVidia Optimus then are you making sure that you are selecting the right .exe file to run with the graphics card? If this game has some kind of launcher that launches that actual game, perhaps you have the launcher using the better card but when the game actually launches, it runs of the integrated card instead.

Or maybe it is a driver problem like HTWingNut said.

Amnesia: Dark Descent is an OpenGL game, not DirectX. It was well known that OpenGL apps/games would default to the IGP, but because of the big uproar it caused HP decided to update the BIOS and drivers to allow users to utilize the discrete GPU.

Alright so I tried installing all the drivers and whatnot, restarted my computer, double-checked program settings in Catalyst Control center (both launcher.exe and amnesia.exe are set to high performance). It's still not working; when I try to run the game I get the subtitles and sound but no video. WHen I looked this up previously multiple sources indicated that this was due to the game not supporting the integrated intel graphics card. This wouldn't be a problem if I could get the game to actually use the right card Q.Q

Edit: Just saw HTWingNut's most recent post and I'm now downloading the new BIOS. I'll report back with results

Edit #2: Updated BIOS and still no dice. Same problems as before :(

I would take this issue over to the HP forums I linked above and ask for help. There's lots of people there that struggled through this issue initially and got it worked out. If they give you any trouble tell them HTWingNut's gonna run over there with his walker and hit them with my cane.

ATI cards hybrid with integrated GPUs should not spontaneously switch at all... There is no Optimus technology like Nvidia.

No there is no optimus technology, but it determines which GPU to use on its own or by user input.

Did you actually go INTO the BIOS settings and switch it to fixed mode? You have to do that.

Nope, no idea how to do that. Could you run me through the basic steps? :)

Shut down the computer, then start it while hitting the F10 key. It should go to a blue screen with menus. I believe you then want to go to the System Configuration tab and change the graphics mode to Fixed.

I'm not 100% sure on what the menu setup is like, but there's definitely a setting that you need to change from Dynamic to Fixed. So go through the menus and change that.

Interesting. I just bought a Dell Vostro 3550 i5 with both the integrated HD 3000 and the AMD 6630 dedicated. I too couldn't run Amnesia, even though I was able to switch cards. It also defaulted to medium settings and the Intel card. The game loaded with sound, all text, subtitles and the loading screen image, but the rest was blank, just a tiny white dot in the centre of a black screen. Fortunately, after many complaints by Vostro owners on Dell's IdeaStorm website, Dell came out with an urgent new BIOS last week and new AMD drivers (A07) which made it all work. I'd heard that HP had sorted the same problem before Dell had sorted theirs. Glad you got yours working now. :)

I'm pretty sure your discrete video card is just too afraid of Amnesia to render it; it simply runs away.
