i got really confused googling as i saw people say that gddr2 and gddr3 won't make much of a difference in games, only in 3dmark scores. then there are other people who say that gddr3 is only better for massive monitors then theres the people who say that gddr2 is complete crap.

soooo.... could somebody explain? im looking at the msi GX630 with QL-62 9600gt ddr3 and DV5T P7350 9600gt ddr2. which one would you choose?

the 8600m GT had two versions, and there was a decent difference(15%) between the two in games. and since these are the same cards, should be the same.

I would go with the MSI by the way.

GDDR3 allows for more memory bandwidth than GDDR2. That's probably one of the main differences in terms of the performance. This means that the GDDR3 GPU will perform slightly faster because of this higher bandwidth. The actual end result of the GPU should be similar though.

Also note the GDDR3 GPU tends to overclock better as well due to higher memory bandwidth.

That being said, as narsnail pointed out, the difference isn't astronomical. Probably within the 10-15% difference range at the "best/worse" case scenario. Your gaming won't be that much worse with the HP because of the GDDR2, but there will be a difference, just not a significant one IMO.

Also, I'd pick the MSI as well, but mostly because the HP dv5t has had issues dealing with the heat output of the 9600M GT.

I wouldn't fret the DDR2 that much, I think you'll be happy with it.

A small discrepancy - GDDR2 is no longer used; it's DDR2. GDDR2 was based on the old DDR standard.

Thank you! and similarly, the only card with ddr3 memory is hd4670. ddr3=\=gddr3.

The worst is that card manufacturers are writting GDDR2 rather than DDR2 and DDR3 rather than GDDR3 on boxes.
