When you play online games and have all your anti-virus, firewall, anti-spam turned on, does this cintibute to lag and connection problems in a game? E.g you ping/latency jumps really high suddenly or you suddenly lose connection to a server. Does these symtoms happen if your anti-virus is turned on?

    Thanks for all replies guys.

It all depends. If your e-mail client is switched on and you get an e-mail then this, along with your spam filter, might cause a bit of lag, (depending on your internet connection) Norton is notoriously bad for causing lag in games at just the wrong moments as it suddenly decides to update etc.
If you set your anti-virus not to auto update or scan, or simply the option off during gameplay then you'll be fine. Best to keep e-mail clients turned off for lag-free play.

I usually don't go through all that trouble. But then again, I'm not a hardcore gamer, so there'll be people who beg to differ. To get the max out of your notebook, processes running should be minimal, so theoretically doing all that you said should give you a performance boost.

It depends. In some cases, anti-virus software might decide to scan network traffic, which can contribute to lag. The best answer is "disable it, and see if the problem goes away"

I have all AV disabled all the time, I just run scans every 4 days or so.

I generally don't have any problems with my Antivirus updating itself. If I am in the middle of a game and it updates, I'll get 5-10 seconds of incredible lag before being back to normal.
Of course, people with dual-core processors won't have any problems.

well anti virus will contribute to eating system reasources if it is running. Firewalls can eat bandwidth due to inspecting packets and what not. I know windows "firewall" is a joke and does harm gameplay as it needs to allow and unblock EVERYTHING. So just turn that off. But ID recomend keeping av turned on, if your pc cant run av auto protect and run a game then you should rethinking gaming.

You turn your firewall off, liquidxit2? I certainly hope you have a hardware one in there as well... you can turn it off for specific applications, you know. That's the whole point of having a software firewall, so it can do application-level filtering. Turning it off wholesale is a Bad Thing(tm).
I agree with turning off automatic scans and such, though. Some anti-virus programs scan EVERY file that is loaded, no matter what. That will kill your gameplay performance, so it's not a bad idea to turn those scans off (temp files, loading game data, etc., every bit of data gets scanned...). I'd turn off anti-spam and automatic email downloading/checking while you're playing as well, because that will definitely change your bandwidth profile for a short time while it downloads (especially if there's an attachment), perhaps at an inopportune time (promise, I've never randomly lagged and missed a great sniping shot because of it)
