Counterstrike 1.6 is a must try as well as UT2004. Also, look up the Quake series, Battlefield 1942, theres a ton...

It really depends on your definition of "old" 10 years? 5? 2+?

Deus Ex isn't a pure FPS, but it's a fantastic game.

Medal of Honor is a great old game. The original Call of Duty is a lot of fun too.

does it have to be old or just run well on lower end hardware?

i put in my vote for battlefield heroes, although its technically brand new.

+1 I'd forgotten about Jedi Outcast, bloody great game. Loved the lightsabre battles with the jedi disciples.

    Half Life
    System Shock 2
    Doom1 & 2

IwantmyMTV, out of interest, how was Terminator: Futureshock? I never got it too work, this was years ago though. Was really annoyed as it looked quite good for the time.

For its time, the game was incredible...

The full motion video briefings were cheesy, but I think it was probably the most technically brilliant FPS of its time...true 3D environment with mouselook well before Quake...one of my most vivid gaming memories was standing over a wide shaft, infiltrating the Skynet base when enemies began rising up toward me as I looked down...commonplace these days, but at the time, it was incredible...

On top of that, you could actually use vehicles...a truck with a gun mounted in the back and an HK...I don't remember another FPS of that era having player usable vehicles...

The atmosphere of the game was very moody and limited ammo and lots of radiation areas made the atmosphere tense for a 1995 game...not scary, just tense...and the limited capabilities of the game engine (this is prior to 3D accelerator cards) still managed to convey a post-apocalyptic city environment very well...there's one level where you're driving your truck under an interstate exchange with overpasses all falling apart...

And I have it running fine under DosBox on the machine in my signature...

If you haven't run through "Prey",

Big Lots (at least in my area) has it for $6.00.

Definitely worth 6 bucks even if it is from 2006.

Otherwise, I'm agreeing with the Half-Life 2 folks.

I cried back in '95, when my dad wouldn't buy Futureshock. I think our CPU wasn't good enough, and he was completely against upgrading for video games. I'm pretty sure I played System Shock at 15 frames per second.

Good call...I loved that game...great weapons...the final boss...Lord Demon Goth Vampire, or whatever his name was, didn't impress me that much...but the half-mechanical beastie at the V2 rocket lab (?) was a ton of fun...

Couple of others for the Older category...

    MDK2
    Serious Sam
    Aliens vs Predator 2

I believe you can pick up MDK2 (and the first one) from gog.com for cheap...

My wife cried when I bought the game...not quite as much as she cried when I bought my (um, I mean our) first PC...

There's a decent guide in the forums on dosbox.com...lots of people had trouble with it...I guess I lucked out...but DOS-based, text driven installations with memory managers and SoundBlaster settings are what I grew up on...just had to learn the DosBox commands for creating virtual HDDs and CD-ROM drives...
