would it be a serious mistake to buy a laptop with this GPU.

Will INTEL ever get it`s act together and fix the drivers.

Every laptop out basic to mid range their seems to have the chip.

what made manufactures build systems round this chip PRICE

    regards

    John.

I wouldn't necessarily call it a mistake. Intel used to have horrible integrated graphics, but the X3100 is a big improvement over the past ones. Such an improvement that companies like ATI and AMD which I think now are merged should be worried about its integrated graphics lines.

Also the X3100 is perfect for anyone who does not game and who checks emails, browse the web listen to music, watch DVDs... and it also extends your battery life and keeps your laptop nice and cool and it's cheaper!

But why do some older games run much better on the older 950 GPU rather than the new X3100.

    regards

    John.

There's nothing wrong with the X3100 when you consider its purpose; it does exactly what it was intended to do. It was designed for people who do not plan to do 3D applications.
The X3100 will perform at about the same level as the GMA 950 without drivers that let it take advantage of its hardware because everything is done in software (slow).

The bigger question is NOT whether Intel will get its act together, its whether integrated will be any useful for the new release games that are coming out. ATI's/Nvidia's integrated graphics are not that much better, if at all(for XP at least).

X3000/X3100 on Vista will get par with XP eventually(maybe even better), but you are not gonna see IGPs performing even to the level of low end cards. You play the latest games and want them to play at high settings with minimal lag, you buy discrete graphics.

on the down low basically intel has no hope of playing games, so dont get laptops with x3100, go for nvidia or ATI, x3100 wasnt meant for gaming
