Started in on LOTRO and noticed a hitching framerate when moving. Occurred with low as well as high video quality settings. Googled it and saw a suggestion of disabling the Quest Guide. This helped reduce the "hitching" or pausing issue greatly. Which makes me wonder if there are other UI or Graphic Settings tweaks out there.

Is your HD able to keep up? MMORPG's are a slightly different beast, most of them require quite a bit more from the entire machine: HD, Memory, CPU.

I had a similar kind of issue when I played Vanguard and it seemed to be due to a failing hard drive.

Also.. what's your latency at when you play?

Turned off Floating Names and that seemed to do even more to lessen the hiccups.

The best tweak for LOTRO is to cancel your account and uninstall the game. What a terrible MMO.

Past that, the best thing you can do to improve performance in an MMO is one of two things:

    1) Reduce the draw distance, that is, how far away you can "see".
    2) Reduce the on screen effects: flora, water, bushes, shadows, lighting, etc.

That's the thing, the "hiccups" appear unaffected by graphic settings. Can go low or high and it really doesn't matter much. But turning off some of the UI settings, such as Floating Names and the Quest Guide have made the hiccups almost unnoticeable.

Well, yeah. Using memory intensive UI mods are going to have that effect on your game. It's the same way with any MMO that allows its players to use third party UI mods. The more UI mods you have running, the more of a negative impact it's going to have on your gameplay.

Doesn't LOTRO have some kind of way to track how much memory usage your UI mods are collectively using while you play? If so, start identifying the most memory intensive ones and disable them one by one until you feel your game is playable. Either that, or start looking for a lightweight version of your mods to replace your memory hungry ones.

and what the hell were you playing?

How can you possibly say LOTRO is a terrible MMO... heh...

    ANYWAY

As far as fixing up hitching in LOTRO in your advanced video settings, go to the trouble shoot tab and limit your max FPS to something like 30 or 45; this helps laptop gpu's keep up with everything going on in the game so it doesnt hitch out. You can also try increasing your memory cache in the advanced tab.

Primarily because it is my opinion to say so. And also the fact that I've spent time playing it.

What because you didn't get the raid gear? Quit whining ~ LOTRO is a top tier MMO, and your opinions have no basis in evidence.

Think I've tried playing with max FPS but I suppose I could take another look at it. Haven't tried memory cache, I'll give that a try. Disabling the Quest Guide had a huge impact in reducing the hitching which I sort of find odd. Would like to of course try newer video drivers but stuck waiting on the DH Modder to support the 4670. Nice game by the way, just started but really enjoying it so far.

I dunno about that. I've played quite a few MMOs and LotRO, imo, is one of the better fantasy-themed ones. Environments are well done and the quests aren't as grinding-intensive as other certain MMOs. What did you not like about LotRO? Please enlighten us. I am truly interested. Is Hello Kitty Online really that much better of an MMO? ;)

OP: Are you running in DX10 by any chance? Have tried playing DX9? I've noticed some performance glitches w/ DX10 with LotRO (or pretty much any other game for that matter). Just a thought.

Who's whining? And why is my opinion of what I think of LOTRO any less than yours? You happen to like LOTRO, I don't. What's the issue here?

    Hihi for reading comprehension.

DX10 on or off doesn't seem to affect the hitching. So far I haven't come across any Video Setting that has made a noticeable impact on hitching, just the UI Setting of Quest Guide. This is on a Studio XPS16 w/ 4670 GPU. LOTRO detects an Optimal Video Setting of "Very High". Texture quality also doesn't seem to make a difference.

Have you tried disabling your third party UI mods and reducing the draw distance like I mentioned earlier?

No UI mods installed, the UI settings I was referring to are in-game. Thinking that turning off LOTRO's Quest Guide is going to be the best I can do. Which isn't bad really, LOTRO went from hitching that was so bad as to make the game almost unplayable to just barely noticeable. May be nitpicking at this point. Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

there's a whole anti-hitching guide on the LOTRO support forums. I just quit playing because I suffered the black-screen crashing issue, along with a lot of other people. LOTRO played fine on the same machine before the Moria expansion (just reinstalled and upgraded after a break) so it's definitely something with the game or with the Nvidia drivers.

But anyways, there's a guide for tweaks to fix your hitching / stuttering issues. It's pretty common, apparently.
